5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Connecting the Enclosure

Connect the UGREEN SSD Enclosure to your computer or compatible device using one of the provided USB-C cables. The enclosure is plug-and-play, meaning no additional drivers are typically required for basic functionality.

5.2 Initializing and Formatting the SSD

For a new SSD, it must be initialized and formatted before use. The process varies slightly depending on your operating system:

Video 2: Hard Disk Formatting and Partitioning Operation Guide. This video provides a visual walkthrough of how to format and partition your SSD on Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

For Windows:

  1. Right-click on 'This PC' and select 'Manage'.
  2. In 'Computer Management', select 'Disk Management'.
  3. Locate your newly added hard disk (it will likely be marked as 'Unallocated').
  4. Right-click on the unallocated space and select 'New Simple Volume'.
  5. Follow the 'New Simple Volume Wizard' prompts, keeping default values or adjusting as needed. Choose a file system (e.g., NTFS for Windows compatibility, exFAT for cross-platform).
  6. Complete the wizard to format and partition the disk.

For macOS:

  1. Use the key combination Command+Spacebar to open Spotlight Search.
  2. Type 'Disk Utility' and press Enter to open the application.
  3. In Disk Utility, select your newly added hard disk from the sidebar.
  4. Click the 'Erase' button in the toolbar.
  5. Enter a name for the disk, choose a format (e.g., APFS for macOS, exFAT for cross-platform), and a scheme (e.g., GUID Partition Map).
  6. Click 'Erase' and wait for the process to complete.

For Linux:

  1. Open a terminal (e.g., Ctrl+Alt+T).
  2. Install exFAT utilities if not already present: sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils -y (for Debian/Ubuntu-based systems).
  3. Open the 'Disks' utility (often found in applications menu).
  4. Select your newly added hard disk from the left panel.
  5. Click the '+' button to create a new partition.
  6. Choose the partition size and select a file system (e.g., exFAT for cross-platform compatibility).
  7. Click 'Create' to format. Once formatted, click the play icon to mount the partition.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cooling System

The enclosure features an intelligent PWM turbo fan and thermal pads to manage heat. Ensure the ventilation grilles on the enclosure are not obstructed to allow for proper airflow. The fan will automatically adjust its speed based on the SSD's temperature to prevent overheating and maintain stable performance.

6.2 Physical Protection

The aluminum alloy casing combined with the surrounding silicone cover provides robust protection against physical damage from accidental drops and scratches. Keep the silicone cover on during use and transport for maximum protection.

6.3 General Care

  • Keep the enclosure clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the enclosure to extreme temperatures or humidity.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble the enclosure beyond the SSD installation steps, as this may void the warranty.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Enclosure Not Detected

  • Check Cable Connection: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the enclosure and your device. Try a different USB port or cable.
  • Verify SSD Installation: Re-open the enclosure and ensure the M.2 NVMe SSD is correctly seated and secured.
  • Initialize/Format SSD: For new SSDs, ensure it has been initialized and formatted according to the operating system instructions in Section 5.2.
  • Compatibility: Confirm your SSD is an NVMe (M-Key or B+M Key) and not a SATA M.2 SSD. The enclosure does not support SATA M.2 drives.

7.2 Slow Transfer Speeds

  • Port Type: Ensure you are connecting to a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4 port on your device for maximum speed. Connecting to older USB ports (e.g., USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1) will result in lower speeds.
  • Cable Quality: Use the provided high-quality USB-C to USB-C cable for optimal performance.
  • SSD Performance: The actual speed is also limited by the performance of your M.2 NVMe SSD.
  • System Load: High CPU usage or other background processes can affect transfer speeds.

7.3 Automatic Ejection (macOS)

Some users may experience the enclosure automatically ejecting during macOS sleep mode. This is a known behavior with some external drives and macOS power management. To mitigate this:

  • Adjust Energy Saver Settings: In macOS System Settings (or System Preferences), navigate to 'Energy Saver' (or 'Battery' on newer Macs) and disable 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible'.
  • Safely Eject: Always safely eject the drive before putting your Mac to sleep or shutting it down.
