BLACK+DECKER 19" Sand Filter Tank with 6-Way Valve and Full Base and Hoses for Above Ground Pools

Model: BDXBT06165

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your BLACK+DECKER 19" Sand Filter Tank. Designed for above ground pools, this sand filtration system offers exceptional performance with minimal upkeep, ensuring clear and clean pool water. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to set up or operate the unit.

Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any service or maintenance.
  • Ensure all electrical connections are made by a qualified electrician and comply with local codes.
  • Do not operate the filter system if any part is damaged or leaking.
  • Keep children away from the filter system during operation.
  • Use only specially graded filter sand as specified.

Package Contents

Verify that all components are present before beginning assembly:

  • 19" Sand Filter Tank
  • 6-Way Multi-Port Valve
  • Full Base for Pump and Tank
  • Hoses for connections
  • Clamps for securing hoses
  • Pressure Gauge
  • Drain Plug and O-rings

Note: 175 lbs of filter sand is required but NOT included with this package.

Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper assembly and installation of your sand filter system:

  1. Prepare the Tank:
Install the drain plug and its O-ring at the bottom of the tank. Ensure it is securely tightened to prevent leaks.
  2. Install the Base:
Place the full base on a level, stable surface near your above ground pool. The base is designed to hold both the filter tank and the pump securely.
  3. Add Filter Sand:
Carefully pour approximately 175 lbs of specially graded filter sand (0.018"-0.022" quartz sand particles) into the filter tank. Ensure the center pipe is protected during this process to prevent sand from entering it.
  4. Attach the 6-Way Valve:
Place the 6-way multi-port valve onto the top of the filter tank, aligning the 'PUMP' port on the valve to face the pump's out port. Secure the valve to the tank using the provided clamp and screws.
  5. Connect the Pump:
Mount the pump onto the base next to the filter tank. Connect the pump's discharge port to the 'PUMP' port on the 6-way valve using the provided hose and clamps.
  6. Connect to Pool:
Connect the 'RETURN' port on the 6-way valve to your pool's return inlet. Connect the pool's skimmer/suction line to the pump's inlet. Use the provided hoses and clamps, ensuring all connections are tight to prevent air leaks.
  7. Install Pressure Gauge:
Wrap the threads of the pressure gauge with Teflon tape and screw it into the designated port on the 6-way valve.

Operating the 6-Way Valve

The 6-way multi-port valve allows you to control the water flow through the filter system. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage.

  • FILTER: This is the standard operating position for daily filtration. Water flows through the sand, trapping debris, and returns to the pool.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush dirty water from the valve to waste before returning to filter mode.
  • BACKWASH: Reverses water flow through the filter to clean the sand bed, sending dirty water to waste. Perform when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure.
  • WASTE: Bypasses the filter, sending water directly to waste. Useful for quickly lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter, circulating water directly back to the pool. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use for servicing the pump or filter.
  • WINTER: Position for winterizing the filter system.

Monitor the pressure gauge regularly. An increase in pressure indicates that the filter sand is becoming dirty and requires backwashing.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter system:

  • Backwashing: When the pressure gauge rises 8-10 PSI above its clean reading, perform a backwash cycle. Turn off the pump, set the valve to BACKWASH, turn on the pump until water runs clear (approx. 2-3 minutes), turn off the pump, set to RINSE, turn on the pump (approx. 30-60 seconds), turn off the pump, then set to FILTER.
  • Sand Replacement: The specially graded filter sand typically lasts for an entire pool season or longer, depending on usage and water quality. Replace the sand when filtration efficiency decreases significantly even after backwashing.
  • Pump Basket Cleaning: Regularly check and clean the pump's pre-filter basket to remove large debris that could impede flow. Turn off the pump, close any necessary valves, open the basket lid, remove and clean the basket, then reassemble.
  • Winterizing: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the filter tank, pump, and hoses. Store the pump and valve in a dry, frost-free location.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your sand filter system, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Low Water Flow: Check for clogged skimmer basket, pump basket, or dirty filter sand (requiring backwash). Ensure all valves are fully open and hoses are not kinked.
  • Cloudy Pool Water: This often indicates insufficient filtration. Check if the filter needs backwashing, ensure proper chemical balance, and verify the pump is running for adequate periods.
  • Leaks: Inspect all hose connections, clamps, and O-rings. Tighten connections or replace worn O-rings as needed. Ensure the drain plug is secure.
  • Pump Not Priming: Ensure the pump basket is full of water and the lid is sealed. Check for air leaks in the suction line.

For persistent issues, consult a qualified pool technician.
