1. Introduction

The Mastech MY74 is a professional handheld digital multimeter designed for accurate measurement of various electrical parameters. It features a 2000-count display, auto power off, and functions for measuring AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, transistor hFE, diode, and continuity. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation of your MY74 multimeter.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to safety precautions when using the multimeter to prevent electric shock or damage to the instrument. Read all safety information before operation.

  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the multimeter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Always disconnect the test leads from the circuit before changing functions.
  • Ensure the test leads are in good condition, without any damaged insulation.
  • Do not operate the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the case is open.
  • Observe the input terminal ratings and the maximum current for each range.

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned off and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
  3. Unscrew the retaining screw(s) and remove the cover.
  4. Insert one 9V 6F22 battery, observing the correct polarity.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw(s).

3.2 Test Lead Connection

  • Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" or "10A" input jack, depending on the measurement function.
  • Connect the black test lead to the "COM" (common) input jack.
  • For temperature measurements, connect the K-type thermocouple to the designated input jacks.

4. Operating Instructions

The MY74 multimeter features manual ranging. Select the appropriate function and range using the rotary switch.

4.1 DC Voltage Measurement (VDC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Voltage (VDC) range.
  2. Connect the red test lead to the positive side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative side.
  3. Read the voltage value on the display.

4.2 AC Voltage Measurement (VAC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage (VAC) range.
  2. Connect the test leads across the circuit points where AC voltage is to be measured.
  3. Read the voltage value on the display.

4.3 DC Current Measurement (ADC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Current (ADC) range.
  2. Caution: To measure current, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the multimeter.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the "mA" or "10A" jack and the black test lead to the "COM" jack.
  4. Break the circuit and connect the multimeter in series.
  5. Apply power to the circuit and read the current value.

4.4 AC Current Measurement (AAC)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the desired AC Current (AAC) range.
  2. Caution: To measure current, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the multimeter.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the "mA" or "10A" jack and the black test lead to the "COM" jack.
  4. Break the circuit and connect the multimeter in series.
  5. Apply power to the circuit and read the current value.

4.5 Resistance Measurement (Ω)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance (Ω) range.
  2. Caution: Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged before measuring resistance.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component or circuit to be measured.
  4. Read the resistance value on the display.

4.6 Capacitance Measurement (F)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Capacitance (F) range.
  2. Caution: Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before measurement to prevent damage to the multimeter.
  3. Connect the test leads across the capacitor terminals.
  4. Read the capacitance value on the display.

4.7 Frequency Measurement (Hz)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Frequency (Hz) range.
  2. Connect the test leads across the signal source.
  3. Read the frequency value on the display.

4.8 Temperature Measurement (°C/°F)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Temperature (°C) range.
  2. Connect the K-type thermocouple to the designated input jacks, observing polarity.
  3. Place the thermocouple probe at the point where temperature is to be measured.
  4. Read the temperature value on the display.

4.9 Diode Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol.
  2. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
  3. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; the display should show "OL" (open loop) for a good diode.

4.10 Continuity Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Continuity symbol.
  2. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  3. If the resistance is less than approximately 50Ω, the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.

4.11 Transistor hFE Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the hFE position.
  2. Insert the transistor leads (E, B, C) into the corresponding holes in the hFE socket, ensuring correct NPN/PNP type selection.
  3. Read the hFE value on the display.

4.12 Data Hold Function

Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold function.

4.13 Auto Power Off

The multimeter will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life. Press any button or turn the rotary switch to power it back on.

4.14 Low Battery Indication

A low battery symbol will appear on the display when the battery voltage drops below the operating level. Replace the battery promptly to ensure accurate measurements.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the multimeter is completely dry before use.

5.2 Battery Replacement

Refer to section 3.1 for battery installation instructions. Replace the 9V 6F22 battery when the low battery indicator appears.

5.3 Fuse Replacement

If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the service manual or contact qualified personnel for fuse replacement. Always use a fuse of the specified type and rating.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check battery installation and ensure the battery has sufficient charge.
  • Incorrect Readings:
    • Verify the correct function and range are selected.
    • Ensure test leads are properly connected and not damaged.
    • Check if the battery is low.
  • Current Measurement Not Working: Check the fuse.
  • "OL" (Overload) Display: The measured value exceeds the selected range. Select a higher range or ensure the input is within the multimeter's capabilities.
