Setup

1. Charging the Keyboard

Before first use, it is recommended to fully charge the keyboard. Connect the provided USB-C cable to the keyboard's USB-C port and the other end to a USB power source (e.g., computer USB port, wall adapter). The charging indicator will show the charging status.

2. Connecting the Keyboard

The SKY81 keyboard supports three connection modes: Wired, 2.4G Wireless, and Bluetooth. Use the toggle switch located on the side of the keyboard to select your desired mode.

Wired Mode (USB-C)

  1. Ensure the toggle switch on the side of the keyboard is set to the "Wired" position (usually indicated by a cable icon or "USB").
  2. Connect the USB-C cable to the keyboard's USB-C port and the other end to your computer's USB port.
  3. The keyboard will be automatically recognized by your system.

2.4G Wireless Mode

  1. Locate the 2.4G USB receiver (usually stored in a compartment on the keyboard).
  2. Plug the 2.4G USB receiver into an available USB port on your computer.
  3. Set the toggle switch on the side of the keyboard to the "2.4G" position (usually indicated by a wireless icon).
  4. The keyboard should connect automatically.

Bluetooth Mode

  1. Set the toggle switch on the side of the keyboard to the "BT" position (usually indicated by a Bluetooth icon).
  2. The keyboard can store up to three Bluetooth devices. To pair, press and hold FN + Q, FN + W, or FN + E for 3-5 seconds until the corresponding key (Q, W, or E) flashes rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  3. On your device (computer, tablet, smartphone), open Bluetooth settings and search for "MageGee SKY81" (or similar).
  4. Select the keyboard to pair. Once connected, the key will stop flashing.
  5. To switch between paired Bluetooth devices, press FN + Q, FN + W, or FN + E briefly.

Operating Instructions

1. Function Key Combinations (FN)

The MageGee SKY81 keyboard utilizes the FN key for various secondary functions. Refer to the keycaps for specific icons.

  • FN + F1-F12: Multimedia and system control functions (e.g., media play/pause, volume up/down, mute, web browser, email).
  • FN + DEL: Turn RGB backlighting On/Off.
  • FN + Backspace: Check battery level.
  • FN + Q/W/E: Switch between Bluetooth devices (short press) or enter Bluetooth pairing mode (long press).
  • FN + WIN: Lock/Unlock Windows key.
  • FN + Left Arrow / Right Arrow: Adjust backlight speed.
  • FN + Up Arrow / Down Arrow: Adjust backlight brightness.
  • FN + Home: Cycle through RGB lighting effects.

2. Dual-Function Control Knob

The metal knob located on the top right of the keyboard serves two primary functions: Light Mode and Volume Mode.

  • Toggle Mode: Press and hold the knob for 3 seconds to switch between Light Mode (default) and Volume Mode.
  • In Light Mode:
    • Rotate the knob: Adjust backlight brightness.
    • Press the knob: Switch between different lighting effects.
  • In Volume Mode:
    • Rotate the knob: Adjust system volume (up/down).
    • Press the knob: Open the default media player.

3. Hot-Swapping Switches and Keycaps

The SKY81 keyboard features hot-swappable sockets, allowing you to change switches without soldering. It is compatible with most 3-pin and 5-pin mechanical switches.

  1. Removing Keycaps: Use the provided keycap puller to gently pull keycaps straight up.
  2. Removing Switches: Use the provided switch puller to carefully grip the top and bottom clips of the switch and pull it straight up. Avoid bending the pins.
  3. Installing Switches: Align the pins of the new switch with the holes on the PCB. Gently push the switch down until it clicks into place. Ensure pins are not bent.
  4. Installing Keycaps: Align the keycap with the switch stem and push down firmly until it is seated.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning Keycaps: Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe keycaps. For deeper cleaning, remove keycaps and wash with mild soap and water, ensuring they are completely dry before reattaching.
  • Cleaning the Keyboard Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the keyboard surface. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used. Avoid excessive moisture.
  • Dust Removal: Use compressed air to remove dust and debris from between keycaps and switches.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the keyboard in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
  • Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the keyboard frequently. Charge it when the battery indicator is low.

Troubleshooting

Bluetooth device not pairing or connecting.
  • Ensure the toggle switch is set to "BT" mode.
  • Press and hold FN + Q/W/E for 3-5 seconds to enter pairing mode.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your device and it's discoverable.
  • Forget the device from your device's Bluetooth settings and try pairing again.
  • Ensure the keyboard battery is not critically low.
RGB backlighting not working or stuck.
  • Press FN + DEL to ensure backlighting is not turned off.
  • Use the control knob or FN + Up/Down Arrow to adjust brightness.
  • Try cycling through lighting effects with FN + Home or pressing the control knob in Light Mode.
Keys not registering or double-typing.
  • Check if the switch under the affected keycap is properly seated. Remove the keycap and switch, then re-insert.
  • If the issue persists, try replacing the switch with one of the spare switches provided.
  • Ensure the keyboard is clean and free of debris.
Battery drains quickly.
  • Reduce RGB backlight brightness or turn it off using FN + DEL.
  • Ensure the keyboard is fully charged.
  • If using 2.4G wireless, ensure the receiver is close to the keyboard.
