5. Setup and Installation
The CHENGHEM Carbon Monoxide Detector is designed for easy plug-and-play installation.
5.1 Placement Guidelines
- Install the detector in rooms with fuel-burning appliances (e.g., furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces) and in sleeping areas.
- For optimal detection, place the unit at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) from any fuel-burning appliance to avoid false alarms during startup.
- Avoid placing the detector in direct sunlight, near heating/cooling vents, or in areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms).
- Ensure the detector is not obstructed by furniture, curtains, or other objects.
5.2 Installation Steps
- Select a suitable standard electrical outlet in your desired location, following the placement guidelines above.
- Plug the CHENGHEM Carbon Monoxide Detector directly into the outlet.
- Upon plugging in, the device will initiate a 60-second preheating countdown. The display will show temperature, humidity, and a countdown. The alarm lights may flash during this period.
- Once the countdown is complete, the device will enter normal monitoring mode, displaying current CO levels (0 PPM if clear), temperature, and humidity.

6. Operation
6.1 Display Readings
The high-definition color screen continuously displays three key environmental parameters:
- Temperature: Shown in Fahrenheit (°F).
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) Concentration: Displayed in Parts Per Million (PPM). A reading of 0 PPM indicates no detectable CO.
- Relative Humidity (RH%): Indicates the percentage of moisture in the air.

6.2 Alarm Thresholds and Behavior
The detector is programmed to alert you to dangerous CO levels with both audible and visual alarms.
- Safe: 0-50 PPM
- Warning: 51-200 PPM
- Danger: 201-999 PPM
When CO concentration exceeds the standard threshold (typically >150 PPM to trigger a full alarm), the device will:
- Emit a loud voice alarm stating, "ATTENTION PLEASE. CARBON MONOXIDE IS DETECTED. PLEASE OPEN WINDOW AND DOOR."
- Flash the red alarm lights.
- Display the increasing CO PPM value on the screen.

6.3 Testing the Alarm
It is recommended to test the alarm function regularly (e.g., monthly) to ensure proper operation.
- Press and hold the Test & Reset Button on the side of the device.
- The alarm will sound, and the lights will flash, indicating that the alarm function is working correctly.
- Release the button to stop the test.
WARNING: Never test the carbon monoxide detector using engine exhaust gas or other sources of concentrated CO, as this can permanently damage the sensor and render the device ineffective.
7. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your detector.
- Cleaning: Gently wipe the exterior of the detector with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use cleaning sprays, polishes, or solvents. Avoid getting water into the air inlets.
- Dust Removal: Periodically vacuum the air inlets to prevent dust buildup, which can affect sensor performance.
- Regular Testing: Test the alarm monthly as described in Section 6.3.
- Sensor Lifespan: Carbon monoxide sensors have a limited lifespan. While this model is designed for durability, if the device consistently shows unusual readings or fails self-tests after several years, consider replacement.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your CHENGHEM Carbon Monoxide Detector, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display after plugging in. | No power to the outlet; device not fully plugged in. | Check the power outlet with another appliance. Ensure the detector is securely plugged in. |
| Alarm sounds frequently without apparent CO source. | False alarm due to interfering substances (e.g., strong cleaning agents, paint fumes, cigarette smoke in close proximity); sensor malfunction. | Ventilate the area. Relocate the detector away from sources of fumes. If false alarms persist, the sensor may be faulty; contact support. |
| Alarm does not sound during test. | Test button not pressed correctly; device malfunction. | Ensure the Test & Reset button is pressed firmly and held for a few seconds. If it still fails, the device may be faulty; contact support. |
| Inaccurate temperature/humidity readings. | Placement near heat/cold sources; sensor obstruction. | Relocate the detector to a more central area away from direct heat/cold. Ensure air inlets are clear. |

10. Important Safety Information
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. This detector is designed to alert you to the presence of CO, but it is not a substitute for proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances or adequate ventilation.
10.1 What to do if the Alarm Sounds
- Immediately move to fresh air outdoors or open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
- Do a head count to check that all persons are accounted for.
- Do not re-enter the premises until the CO has dissipated and the alarm has stopped.
- Call your emergency services, fire department, or a qualified technician to investigate the source of the CO.
- Do not use fuel-burning appliances until they have been inspected and repaired by a qualified technician.
10.2 General Safety Precautions
- This device is for indoor use only.
- Do not paint the detector. Paint can clog the openings and interfere with the sensor's ability to detect CO.
- Do not block the air inlets.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Ensure proper ventilation in areas with fuel-burning appliances.
