Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury or damage:

  • Read all instructions: Before operating the winch, read and understand all instructions and warnings in this manual.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear: Always wear safety glasses, gloves, and appropriate clothing when operating the winch.
  • Keep clear of the wire rope: Never touch the wire rope or hook when the winch is under load or in operation. Keep hands and body away from the fairlead and drum.
  • Do not exceed rated capacity: Never attempt to pull loads exceeding the winch's 2000-lb. rated capacity. Overloading can cause damage to the winch and lead to serious injury.
  • Secure the load: Ensure the load is properly secured and balanced before winching.
  • Inspect before use: Before each use, inspect the winch, wire rope, hook, and mounting hardware for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. Do not use if damaged.
  • Maintain proper battery connection: Ensure the 12V DC power source is clean, secure, and provides adequate power. Avoid short circuits.
  • Avoid continuous operation: Do not operate the winch continuously for extended periods. Allow the motor to cool down between pulls to prevent overheating.
  • Use only genuine parts: Use only Ironton approved replacement parts and accessories.
  • Keep children and bystanders away: Ensure children and bystanders are kept at a safe distance from the winching area.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and effective operation of your winch. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Choose a Mounting Location: Select a sturdy, flat surface on your boat trailer or other marine application that can support the weight and pulling force of the winch. Ensure the location allows for clear access to the winch and the path of the wire rope.
  2. Mount the Bracket: Position the mounting bracket and mark the drilling points. Drill appropriate holes and secure the bracket using suitable marine-grade fasteners (not included). Ensure the bracket is firmly attached and does not wobble.
  3. Attach the Winch: Align the winch with the mounting bracket and secure it using the provided hardware. Double-check all bolts and nuts to ensure they are tightened securely.
  4. Connect to Power:
    • Connect the red positive (+) cable from the winch to the positive terminal of a 12 Volt DC marine battery.
    • Connect the black negative (-) cable from the winch to the negative terminal of the battery.
    • Ensure all connections are clean, tight, and free from corrosion. Use appropriate battery terminals.
  5. Connect the Remote Control: Plug the wired remote control into the designated port on the winch unit.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective operation of your Ironton Electric Marine Winch:

  1. Pre-Operation Check: Before each use, inspect the winch, wire rope, hook, and all connections for damage or wear. Ensure the battery is fully charged and connections are secure.
  2. Unspooling the Wire Rope:
    • Press and hold the "OUT" button on the remote control to unspool the wire rope.
    • Ensure the rope spools out smoothly without kinks or tangles.
    • Do not unspool more rope than necessary. Always leave at least 5 wraps of rope on the drum to prevent the rope from detaching.
  3. Attaching the Hook: Securely attach the hook to the item you intend to winch. Ensure the hook's safety latch is closed.
  4. Winching the Load:
    • Stand clear of the wire rope and the load.
    • Press and hold the "IN" button on the remote control to begin winching the load.
    • Winch slowly and steadily. Avoid sudden jerks.
    • Monitor the load and the winch for any signs of strain or malfunction.
    • If the winch struggles or the motor sounds strained, stop immediately. The load may be too heavy or obstructed.
  5. Stopping Operation: Release the "IN" or "OUT" button to stop the winch. The dynamic braking system will automatically hold the load.
  6. After Use: Once the winching operation is complete, carefully unhook the load. Spool the wire rope back onto the drum neatly and evenly. Disconnect the power cables from the battery when not in use.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance will extend the life of your Ironton Electric Marine Winch and ensure safe operation:

  • Cleanliness: After each use, especially in marine environments, rinse the winch with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, and debris. Dry thoroughly.
  • Wire Rope Inspection: Regularly inspect the wire rope for fraying, kinks, broken strands, or corrosion. If the rope shows significant damage, it must be replaced immediately.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of marine-grade lubricant to the wire rope and moving parts (e.g., hook pivot points, fairlead rollers if applicable) to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth operation.
  • Electrical Connections: Check battery terminals and winch connections regularly for corrosion. Clean with a wire brush and apply dielectric grease if necessary to maintain good conductivity.
  • Mounting Hardware: Periodically check all mounting bolts and nuts for tightness. Re-tighten as needed.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the winch in a dry, protected area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your winch, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Winch does not operate. No power, loose connections, dead battery, faulty remote.Check battery connections and charge. Ensure remote is fully plugged in. Test battery voltage.
Winch operates slowly or with reduced power.Low battery charge, undersized wiring, excessive load, motor overheating.Charge battery. Ensure wiring is appropriate gauge. Reduce load. Allow motor to cool.
Wire rope is tangled or spools unevenly.Improper spooling, damaged rope.Unspool rope completely (leaving 5 wraps), then re-spool under light tension. Inspect rope for damage.
Winch makes unusual noises.Internal damage, lack of lubrication, foreign object.Stop operation immediately. Inspect for obstructions. If noise persists, contact customer support.

If these solutions do not resolve the issue, please contact Ironton customer support.
