2. Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage to the meter, please read and follow all safety instructions carefully before use. Failure to observe these warnings could result in electric shock, fire, or damage to the device.

  • Always ensure the test leads are correctly inserted into the appropriate input jacks for the desired measurement.
  • Do not exceed the maximum input values specified for each range.
  • Never apply voltage to the meter when the rotary switch is set to current, resistance, diode, or continuity functions.
  • Exercise extreme caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC, as these values pose a shock hazard.
  • Before measuring current, ensure the circuit is de-energized and the meter is connected in series.
  • Before measuring resistance, diode, or continuity, ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
  • Replace the battery immediately when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
  • Do not operate the meter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are damaged.

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

The ANENG AN8205C requires a 9V battery for operation. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  3. Remove the screw securing the cover (if present) and carefully open the compartment.
  4. Connect a new 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity.
  5. Place the battery inside the compartment and close the cover, securing it with the screw.

4.2. Connecting Test Leads

Always connect the black test lead to the COM jack. Connect the red test lead to the appropriate jack based on the measurement type:

  • For Voltage, Resistance, Diode, Continuity, and small Current (up to 200mA): Connect the red lead to the VΩmA jack.
  • For large DC Current (up to 10A): Connect the red lead to the 10ADC jack.

5. Operating Instructions

Before taking any measurement, ensure the test leads are correctly connected and the rotary switch is set to the appropriate function and range.

5.1. Measuring DC Voltage (V=)

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Voltage range (e.g., 20V, 200V, 600V). Start with the highest range if the voltage is unknown.
  3. Connect the test probes across the component or circuit to be measured, observing polarity.
  4. Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

5.2. Measuring AC Voltage (V~)

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage range (e.g., 200V, 600V). Start with the highest range if the voltage is unknown.
  3. Connect the test probes across the AC source or component.
  4. Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

5.3. Measuring DC Current (A=)

Caution: Never connect the meter in parallel with a voltage source when measuring current. This can blow the fuse or damage the meter.

  1. Determine the expected current. For currents up to 200mA, connect the red lead to VΩmA. For currents up to 10A, connect the red lead to 10ADC. Connect the black lead to COM.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the appropriate DC Current range (e.g., 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 10A).
  3. De-energize the circuit and open it at the point where current is to be measured.
  4. Connect the meter in series with the circuit.
  5. Re-energize the circuit and read the current value on the LCD display.

5.4. Measuring Resistance (Ω)

Caution: Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged before measuring resistance.

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (e.g., 200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2MΩ).
  3. Connect the test probes across the resistor or component.
  4. Read the resistance value on the LCD display.

5.5. Diode Test

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol (→|).
  3. Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode. A forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes) will be displayed.
  4. Reverse the probes. The display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.

5.6. Continuity Test

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
  2. Set the rotary switch to the Continuity symbol ()))).
  3. Connect the test probes across the circuit or component.
  4. If the resistance is below approximately 50Ω, the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity. The display will also show the resistance value.

5.7. hFE (Transistor) Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the hFE position.
  2. Identify if the transistor is NPN or PNP.
  3. Insert the transistor leads (Emitter, Base, Collector) into the corresponding holes in the hFE socket.
  4. Read the hFE value (DC current gain) on the LCD display.

5.8. Backlight Function

Press the BACK LIGHT button to turn the display backlight ON or OFF. This feature is useful for working in dimly lit environments.

5.9. Data Hold Function

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the LCD display. Press it again to release the hold function and resume live measurements.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input jacks free of dust and debris.

6.2. Battery Replacement

Refer to section 4.1 for instructions on how to replace the 9V battery. Always replace the battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display to ensure measurement accuracy.

6.3. Storage

If the meter is not to be used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage and damage. Store the meter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
