4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Placement
Carefully remove the machine from its packaging. Place the machine on a stable, level, and heat-resistant surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the machine.

Figure 1: Dimensions of the Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA Espresso Machine. The machine measures approximately 17.6 inches deep, 10.7 inches wide, and 14 inches high.
4.2 Filling the Water Reservoir
The water reservoir is located at the top rear of the machine. Lift the lid and fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water. Do not overfill. Ensure the water level is always above the minimum mark during operation.
4.3 Initial Power-On and Heating
- Plug the machine into a grounded 120V electrical outlet.
- Turn on the main power switch, usually located on the front or side of the machine.
- The machine will begin to heat up. This process can take 15-20 minutes. The indicator light will signal when the machine has reached operating temperature.
4.4 First Flush
Before making your first espresso, perform a 'first flush' to prime the system and remove any manufacturing residues:
- With the machine heated, attach the portafilter (without coffee) to the group head.
- Place a cup under the portafilter.
- Activate the brew lever for 15-20 seconds to allow water to flow through.
- Open the steam wand and hot water tap for a few seconds each to ensure all lines are primed.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
To power on, flip the main power switch. To power off, flip the switch back. Always allow the machine to cool down before unplugging or moving.
5.2 Adjusting Temperature (Boiler Pressure)
The Appartamento TCA features a unique hybrid PID design allowing temperature adjustment via 4 selectable boiler pressures: 0.9, 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 Bars. Refer to the specific instructions provided with your machine for how to cycle through these settings, as there are no additional screens or buttons for this function.
5.3 Brewing Espresso

Figure 2: An espresso shot being extracted into a glass from the portafilter.
- Prepare the Portafilter: Grind fresh coffee beans to an espresso-fine consistency. Fill the appropriate filter basket (single or double) with ground coffee. Distribute evenly and tamp firmly. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim.
- Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the group head and twist firmly to secure it.
- Place Cup: Position your espresso cup(s) under the portafilter spouts.
- Start Extraction: Lift the brew lever to begin the espresso extraction. The ideal extraction time is typically 25-30 seconds for a double shot.
- Stop Extraction: Lower the brew lever to stop the flow once the desired volume is reached.
5.4 Steaming Milk
Ensure the machine is at full steam pressure. Purge the steam wand briefly into the drip tray to remove any condensed water. Insert the steam wand tip just below the surface of cold milk in a stainless steel pitcher. Open the steam valve fully. Once the milk reaches the desired temperature and texture, close the steam valve and immediately wipe the wand clean.
5.5 Hot Water Dispensing
Place a cup under the hot water spout. Open the hot water valve to dispense hot water. Close the valve when finished.
5.6 Standby Mode (Eco-Mode)
The Appartamento TCA includes a selectable 30-minute 'eco-mode' to conserve energy when the machine is not in use. Consult your machine's specific settings for activation and deactivation of this feature.
5.7 Indicator Light
A new RGB-style indicator light provides at-a-glance visibility for various statuses and warnings, such as heating status, low water level, and other operational alerts. Refer to the machine's specific light codes for detailed meanings.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Baskets: After each use, remove the spent coffee grounds (puck) and rinse the portafilter and basket thoroughly under hot water.
- Group Head: Use the cleaning brush to remove any coffee grounds from the group head gasket and shower screen. Perform a quick 'flush' by activating the brew lever for a few seconds.
- Steam Wand: Immediately after steaming milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. Purge the wand briefly to clear any milk residue from the inside.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily.
- Exterior: Wipe down the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
6.2 Descaling
The frequency of descaling depends on your water hardness and machine usage. Hard water areas will require more frequent descaling. Use a descaling solution specifically designed for espresso machines and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Regular descaling prevents mineral buildup and ensures optimal machine performance.
6.3 Water Reservoir Cleaning
Periodically remove and clean the water reservoir with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue before refilling.
