Product Overview

The Rugged Radios R1 Handheld Radio is a versatile two-way communication device designed for various applications including work, racing, and recreational activities. This Ready Pack includes two R1 handheld radios with extended range antennas, XL batteries for extended operation, USB charging cables, and a storage bag. The R1 radio supports both digital and analog frequencies, offering clear communication and compatibility with a wide range of devices.

Setup Guide

1. Battery Installation and Charging

Before initial use, ensure the XL battery is fully charged. The R1 radio features a USB charging port at the bottom for convenient charging.

  1. Attach the XL battery to the back of the R1 radio, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
  2. Connect the included USB charging cable to the USB port at the bottom of the radio.
  3. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the AC power block or any compatible USB power source (e.g., vehicle USB port, computer).
  4. The radio's display will indicate charging status. A full charge can provide up to 24 hours of battery life.

2. Antenna Attachment

Screw the XL antenna onto the top connector of the R1 radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

3. Belt Clip Attachment

Attach the belt clip to the back of the radio for easy carrying. Slide the clip into the designated slot until it locks.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume Control

To power on the radio, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise. Continue rotating to adjust the volume. Rotate counter-clockwise until a click is heard to power off.

2. Basic Communication (Push-to-Talk)

To transmit, press and hold the Push-to-Talk (PTT) button located on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to listen.

3. Channel Selection and Presets

The R1 radio comes pre-programmed with 109 VHF/UHF business band digital and analog frequencies. Use the Up/Down arrows on the keypad to navigate through channels. The P1 and P2 buttons can be programmed as quick access channel presets.

4. Digital and Analog Modes

The R1 supports both digital and analog communication. Digital mode offers superior voice clarity by removing background noise, while analog mode ensures compatibility with older radio systems. The radio is pre-programmed to utilize both.

5. Dual Channel Monitoring

The R1 radio can monitor two channels simultaneously. This feature is useful for listening to a team frequency on one channel and a race control or other group on another, allowing you to toggle between them for transmission.

6. Text Messaging (Digital Mode)

In digital mode, the R1 radio supports text messaging. You can send pre-set messages (programmed via software) or manually enter messages using the keypad to communicate with other digital R1 users.

7. Flashlight Function

The R1 radio includes a built-in flashlight. Activate it using the dedicated flashlight button on the keypad (often labeled with a lightbulb icon) or a programmable side key.

Specifications

Warranty Information

Rugged Radios guarantees its Radios, Intercoms & Headsets to be free from manufacturing defects in material and workmanship under normal use for a period of three (3) years from the date of purchase. Aviation headsets are warrantied for 7 years. All other Rugged Radios branded products carry a one-year warranty.

In the event that a defect covered by the warranty occurs during the applicable period, Rugged Radios, at its discretion, will either repair or replace the product. This action shall be the full extent of Rugged Radios' liability and the Customer’s sole and exclusive reparation.

Rugged Radios shall not be responsible for any defects or damage that, in Rugged Radios' view, are a result of mishandling, abuse, misuse, improper storage, or improper operation of the device, including use in conjunction with equipment that is electronically or mechanically incompatible with, or of inferior quality to, the product, as well as failure to maintain the environmental conditions specified by the manufacturer.
