WEN DF5600X Dual Fuel Portable Generator Instruction Manual

Model: DF5600X

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your WEN 5,600-Watt Dual Fuel Portable Generator, Model DF5600X. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the generator to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.

The WEN DF5600X is designed to provide portable power, operating on both gasoline and propane. It features 5600 starting watts and 4500 running watts on gasoline, and 5000 surge watts and 4050 rated watts on propane. Key features include electric start, a CO Watchdog shutdown sensor, and a wheel kit for enhanced portability.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Operating a generator can be dangerous. Always follow safety precautions to prevent serious injury or death.

  • Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless, and deadly gas. Operate generators outdoors only, far away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate indoors, in garages, or in partially enclosed spaces. The WEN Watchdog CO Shutdown Sensor is an important safety feature that automatically turns off the generator if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are detected. However, it is not a substitute for safe operation practices.
  • Fire Hazard: Gasoline and propane are highly flammable. Store fuel in approved containers in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Do not refuel a hot or running engine. Ensure proper ventilation when using propane.
  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Never operate the generator in wet conditions. Do not connect the generator directly to your home's electrical system without a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician. This can cause backfeed, which can electrocute utility workers.
  • Hot Surfaces: The generator's engine and muffler become very hot during operation and remain hot for some time after shutdown. Avoid contact with hot surfaces to prevent burns.
  • Noise Hazard: Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can cause hearing damage. Wear hearing protection when operating the generator.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the generator at all times.

5. Setup and Assembly

5.1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the generator and all components from the packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Report any damage or missing parts to WEN customer service immediately.

5.2. Wheel and Handle Kit Assembly

  1. Attach the support legs to the front frame of the generator using the provided bolts and nuts.
  2. Slide the axles through the wheel mounts on the rear frame. Secure the wheels with the provided washers and cotter pins.
  3. Install the handles onto the designated mounting points on the frame, securing them with the pins.

5.3. Adding Engine Oil

The generator is shipped without engine oil. It is crucial to add the correct amount and type of oil before first use.

  • Place the generator on a level surface.
  • Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
  • Using the provided oil funnel, slowly add 16.9 fl oz (0.5 L) of SAE 10W-30 engine oil. Do not overfill.
  • Reinsert the dipstick and tighten. Check the oil level periodically and top up as needed.

5.4. Adding Fuel (Gasoline or Propane)

This generator operates on both unleaded gasoline and propane (LPG).

For Gasoline Operation:

  • Use only fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
  • Ensure the generator is off and cool before refueling.
  • Open the fuel cap and slowly add gasoline to the tank (maximum 4.3 gallons). Do not overfill.
  • Securely close the fuel cap.

For Propane (LPG) Operation:

  • Connect the provided propane hose and regulator to a standard 20 lb (or larger) propane tank.
  • Ensure all connections are tight.
  • Open the valve on the propane tank slowly.

IMPORTANT: Never mix gasoline and propane in the same tank. Only one fuel type can be used at a time.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Starting the Generator

Ensure the generator is on a level, outdoor surface, away from any structures or vents.

Electric Start (Gasoline):

  1. Ensure all electrical devices are unplugged from the generator.
  2. Set the Fuel Selector Switch to "GAS".
  3. Turn the Engine Switch to "ON".
  4. Push and hold the Engine Switch to the "START" position until the engine starts. Release the switch once started.
  5. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before connecting electrical loads.

Electric Start (Propane):

  1. Ensure all electrical devices are unplugged from the generator.
  2. Set the Fuel Selector Switch to "LPG".
  3. Slowly open the valve on the propane tank.
  4. Turn the Engine Switch to "ON".
  5. Push and hold the Engine Switch to the "START" position until the engine starts. Release the switch once started. Propane may require slightly longer cranking.
  6. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before connecting electrical loads.

Recoil Start (Backup):

If the electric start battery is low or dead, use the recoil start.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 (Gasoline) or 1-4 (Propane) for fuel selection and engine switch.
  2. Grasp the recoil starter handle firmly and pull slowly until resistance is felt.
  3. Pull sharply and quickly to start the engine. Repeat if necessary.

6.2. Connecting Electrical Loads

Once the generator is running smoothly, you can connect your electrical devices. Ensure the total wattage of connected devices does not exceed the generator's running wattage.

  • Plug in devices one at a time, starting with the highest wattage items.
  • Monitor the data meter for voltage and frequency readings.
  • If the generator becomes overloaded, the circuit breakers will trip. Reduce the load and reset the breakers.

6.3. Stopping the Generator

  1. Unplug all electrical devices from the generator.
  2. Allow the generator to run for a few minutes with no load to cool down.
  3. For Gasoline: Turn the Engine Switch to "OFF".
  4. For Propane: Close the valve on the propane tank first, allow the engine to run until it stalls from fuel starvation, then turn the Engine Switch to "OFF". This purges the fuel line.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and reliable operation of your generator.

Maintenance ItemFrequencyProcedure
Check Engine Oil LevelBefore each useEnsure oil is at the proper level. Add if low.
Change Engine OilFirst 20 hours, then every 50 hours or annuallyDrain old oil, refill with 16.9 fl oz of SAE 10W-30.
Clean Air FilterEvery 50 hours or as neededRemove and clean foam filter element with warm, soapy water. Dry thoroughly and re-oil lightly.
Check Spark PlugEvery 100 hours or annuallyInspect for wear, clean, and adjust gap if necessary. Replace if worn.
Inspect Fuel FilterAnnually or as neededInspect for clogs or damage. Replace if necessary.
Clean Cooling FinsEvery 100 hours or annuallyRemove debris from engine cooling fins to prevent overheating.

7.1. Storage

For long-term storage (more than 30 days), proper preparation is necessary to prevent fuel degradation and engine damage.

  • Fuel Stabilizer: Add a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline tank and run the engine for a few minutes to circulate it.
  • Drain Carburetor: Turn off the fuel valve (if applicable) and run the engine until it runs out of fuel to drain the carburetor.
  • Drain Fuel Tank: For very long storage, it is recommended to drain the gasoline tank completely.
  • Propane: Disconnect the propane tank and store it separately.
  • Oil Change: Perform an oil change before storage.
  • Spark Plug: Remove the spark plug and pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the recoil cord a few times to distribute the oil, then reinstall the spark plug.
  • Battery: Disconnect the battery terminals and store the battery in a cool, dry place. Charge it periodically.
  • Cover the generator and store it in a clean, dry area.
