2. Product Features

  • High-Quality Construction: Features a solid aluminum core body and a steel shackle. The shackle is treated with NANO-PROTECT anti-corrosion solution and wrapped in a non-conductive synthetic material for insulation against electric shock. The casing is non-magnetic and dielectric.
  • Key Retention Function: The key cannot be removed from the padlock until the shackle is fully closed and the lock is engaged. This ensures the padlock is always locked when the key is removed, promoting safety.
  • Advanced Cylinder: Equipped with a high-precision 6-pin cylinder for enhanced tamper resistance.
  • OSHA Compliant: Designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for lockout tagout procedures.
  • Multilingual Safety Labels: Includes self-adhesive labels in English, Spanish, and French for clear safety warnings and personalization.

4. Operating Instructions

The ABUS 74/40 padlock operates with a key retention feature, meaning the key cannot be removed until the padlock is securely locked. This design reinforces the "One lock - one key - one operator" principle for enhanced safety.

4.1. Locking Procedure

  1. Insert the unique key into the keyway of the padlock.
  2. Turn the key clockwise approximately one-quarter turn.
  3. While holding the key in the turned position, pull the shackle upwards to open the padlock. The key will remain captive in the lock body.
  4. Position the open padlock onto the lockout device or energy isolation point.
  5. Push the shackle down firmly into the padlock body until it clicks into place, indicating it is locked.
  6. Once the padlock is locked, the key can be removed.

4.2. Unlocking Procedure

  1. Insert the correct key into the keyway of the padlock.
  2. Turn the key clockwise approximately one-quarter turn.
  3. While holding the key in the turned position, pull the shackle upwards to open the padlock.
  4. Remove the padlock from the lockout device or energy isolation point.
  5. To remove the key, ensure the shackle is fully closed and the lock is engaged.

5. Safety Guidelines

  • Always follow established Lockout Tagout (LOTO) procedures as mandated by OSHA and your organization's safety protocols.
  • Ensure that each padlock is used by only one authorized employee, with one key per lock, to prevent unauthorized removal or operation.
  • The non-conductive body and shackle are designed for electrical safety applications. Do not bypass or modify these features.
  • Regularly inspect padlocks for any signs of damage or wear. Damaged padlocks should be immediately removed from service and replaced.
  • Never force a key or shackle. If resistance is encountered, inspect for obstructions or damage.

6. Maintenance

The ABUS 74/40 padlocks are designed for durability and feature an anti-corrosion shackle. Minimal maintenance is required to ensure optimal performance:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the padlock body and shackle with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the non-conductive casing.
  • Lubrication: If the keyway or shackle mechanism becomes stiff, apply a small amount of graphite-based lubricant or a non-greasy, non-silicone lubricant specifically designed for locks. Avoid oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
  • Storage: Store padlocks in a clean, dry environment when not in use to prevent accumulation of contaminants.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Key is difficult to insert or turn: Check for debris in the keyway. Apply a small amount of lock lubricant. Ensure you are using the correct key for the specific padlock.
  • Shackle is stiff or not opening/closing smoothly: Clean the shackle and the shackle holes on the padlock body. Apply lock lubricant to the shackle mechanism. Do not force the shackle.
  • Key cannot be removed: This is a feature of the key retention function. Ensure the padlock shackle is fully closed and the lock is engaged. The key will only release when the padlock is in the locked position.
  • Padlock appears damaged: If the padlock body, shackle, or key shows signs of significant wear, bending, or cracking, discontinue use immediately and replace the padlock.
