2. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safety and performance of your Thule Motion 3 Rooftop Box. Ensure your vehicle's roof rack system is compatible and correctly installed before mounting the cargo box.

2.1 Mounting the Box:

  1. Place the Thule Motion 3 onto your vehicle's roof bars.
  2. Utilize the PowerClick quick-mount system located inside the box. Rotate the integrated torque knob until it "clicks," indicating a secure and proper fit. Repeat for all mounting points.
  3. Verify that all four mounting points are securely fastened and the box is centered on your roof bars.

2.2 Checking Roof Hatch Clearance:

To determine which cargo boxes fit your vehicle without contacting your hatch, measure from the center of your vehicle's front roof rack crossbar to the point where the roof meets the hatch. Compare this number to the "Front Clearance" dimensions below. If your vehicle measures more than the number listed, that cargo box will hit your vehicle without contacting your hatch.

Note: Some roof racks feature adjustable position crossbars. Moving the crossbars forward on the vehicle will increase the number of cargo boxes that fit without contacting the hatch. If you're unsure whether your vehicle's crossbars can be re-positioned, see your vehicle or roof rack manufacturer for assistance.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Thule Motion 3 Rooftop Box, regular maintenance is recommended.

  • Cleaning: Clean the exterior and interior of the box with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners that may damage the finish.
  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the locking mechanism and hinges with a silicone-based spray to ensure smooth operation.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the rooftop box in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Consider using a storage cover to protect it from dust and scratches.
  • Inspection: Before each trip, inspect all mounting hardware, straps, and the locking system for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure all components are secure.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Thule Motion 3 Rooftop Box.

  • Lid not closing securely: Ensure no items are obstructing the lid's path. Check the SlideLock system for any debris or misalignment. The integrated torque indicator should "click" when fully closed.
  • Difficulty with mounting: Verify that the PowerClick quick-mount system is correctly aligned with your roof bars. Ensure the torque knob is fully tightened until it clicks.
  • Excessive wind noise: While the aerodynamic design minimizes noise, ensure the box is securely mounted and all contents are properly secured to prevent rattling. Check that the box is positioned correctly on your roof bars according to your vehicle's specifications.
  • Water leakage: The box is designed to be water-resistant. Ensure the lid is fully closed and locked, and the seals are free from debris or damage.
