Db Drive WDX 2000.1 Class D Monoblock Amplifier

User Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Db Drive WDX 2000.1 Class D Monoblock Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or operate the amplifier to ensure optimal performance and safety. Retain this manual for future reference.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the amplifier or vehicle:

  • Professional Installation Recommended: Installation of car audio components requires experience with electrical wiring and automotive systems. If you are unsure, consult a professional installer.
  • Disconnect Battery: Before starting any installation, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Proper Fusing: Always use an external fuse on the main power cable, located within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery. Ensure the fuse rating matches the amplifier's requirements.
  • Secure Wiring: Route all wiring carefully to avoid pinching, chafing, or damage from moving parts. Use grommets when passing wires through metal panels.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the amplifier. Do not mount it in enclosed spaces where heat cannot dissipate.
  • Avoid Moisture: Do not expose the amplifier to moisture or water.
  • Correct Impedance: Ensure the speaker load impedance matches the amplifier's specifications to prevent overheating and damage.

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Mounting the Amplifier

Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and secure. Avoid mounting the amplifier directly on carpet or in areas prone to excessive vibration or heat. Ensure sufficient space around the amplifier for air circulation.

4.2 Wiring Connections

Follow these steps for proper wiring:

  1. Power Connection (+12V): Connect a heavy-gauge power cable (e.g., 4 AWG or larger) from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the amplifier's +12V terminal. Install an in-line fuse holder with the appropriate fuse rating (refer to specifications) within 18 inches of the battery.
  2. Ground Connection (GND): Connect a heavy-gauge ground cable of the same size as the power cable from the amplifier's GND terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
  3. Remote Turn-On (REM): Connect a smaller gauge wire (e.g., 18 AWG) from the amplifier's REM terminal to the remote turn-on output of your head unit. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your car's audio system.
  4. RCA Input: Connect RCA cables from the pre-out (low-level output) of your head unit to the amplifier's LOW LEVEL INPUT (Left and Right) terminals.
  5. Speaker Output: Connect your subwoofer(s) to the amplifier's SPEAKER OUTPUT terminals. Ensure the total impedance of the connected speakers matches the amplifier's stable operating impedance (typically 1 Ohm for monoblock amplifiers). Pay attention to polarity (+ to + and - to -).

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Initial Power-Up

After all connections are made and verified, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. The amplifier's POWER indicator should illuminate, indicating it is receiving power.

5.2 Adjusting Controls

  • GAIN (LEVEL): This control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output voltage of your head unit. Start with the gain set to minimum. Play a familiar track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear distortion, then back off slightly. The CLIP indicator should not illuminate during normal listening.
  • LOW PASS FILTER (LPF): This filter allows only frequencies below the set point to pass through to the subwoofer. Adjust this based on your subwoofer's characteristics and personal preference, typically between 50Hz and 120Hz.
  • SUBSONIC FILTER: This filter removes extremely low frequencies that are below the audible range and can cause damage to your subwoofer. Set it slightly below your subwoofer's port tuning frequency (if ported) or around 20-30Hz for sealed enclosures.
  • BASS EQ: This control provides a boost at a specific bass frequency. Use sparingly to avoid distortion and potential damage to your speakers.

5.3 Indicator Lights

  • POWER: Illuminates when the amplifier is on and operating normally.
  • CLIP: Illuminates when the input signal is too high or the amplifier is clipping. Reduce the gain or head unit volume.
  • PROTECT: Illuminates when the amplifier detects a fault (e.g., short circuit, overheating, low voltage). Turn off the system, check wiring, and allow the amplifier to cool down.

6. Maintenance

The Db Drive WDX 2000.1 amplifier requires minimal maintenance. Keep the amplifier clean and free of dust and debris. Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Ensure the amplifier's cooling fins are not obstructed to allow for proper heat dissipation.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

SymptomPossible CauseSolution
Amplifier does not turn on (POWER light off)No power, poor ground, no remote signal, blown fuse.Check +12V, GND, and REM connections. Verify fuse at battery. Test remote wire for 12V.
No sound outputRCA cables disconnected, speaker wires disconnected/shorted, gain too low, head unit issue.Check RCA connections. Verify speaker wiring and impedance. Adjust gain. Test head unit.
Distorted soundGain set too high, speaker impedance too low, damaged speaker, poor ground.Reduce gain. Check speaker impedance. Inspect speakers for damage. Verify ground connection.
Amplifier goes into PROTECT modeOverheating, shorted speaker wire, impedance too low, low voltage.Allow amplifier to cool. Check speaker wiring for shorts. Verify speaker impedance. Check vehicle's charging system.
