2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when operating power equipment. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

2.1 General Safety Rules

  • Read and understand all instructions in this manual before operating the mower.
  • Keep children and pets away from the operating area.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection, hearing protection, and sturdy footwear.
  • Never operate the mower under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Inspect the area for objects that could be thrown by the blade before mowing.
  • Do not operate the mower on steep slopes.
  • Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance or clearing obstructions.

3. Setup and Initial Checks

Your Ariens Razor 21 Mower is designed for minimal assembly. Before first use, perform the following checks:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the mower from its packaging.
  2. Handle Adjustment: Adjust the handle to a comfortable operating height. Ensure all locking mechanisms are secure.
  3. Fuel and Oil: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline. The Briggs & Stratton EXi725 engine does not require oil changes; however, check the oil level before each use and add if necessary. Refer to the engine manual for specific oil type and capacity.
  4. Blade Check: Ensure the blade is securely attached and free from damage.
  5. Grass Bag/Discharge Chute: Attach the grass bag or ensure the rear discharge chute is properly installed, depending on your desired mowing method.

4. Operation

4.1 Starting the Engine

  1. Ensure the fuel tank is filled and the oil level is correct.
  2. Move the throttle lever (if present) to the "FAST" or "START" position.
  3. Grasp the engine brake control bar and pull it towards the handle.
  4. Pull the starter rope with a rapid, continuous motion until the engine starts.
  5. Once started, release the starter rope slowly.

4.2 Mowing Procedures

  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Adjust the cutting height using the levers on each wheel. The mower offers cutting heights from 1 to 4 inches.
  • 3-in-1 Functionality:
    • Mulching: Ensure the mulching plug is installed and the grass bag is removed.
    • Bagging: Attach the grass bag securely.
    • Rear Discharge: Remove the grass bag and mulching plug, ensuring the rear discharge deflector is in place.
  • Self-Propelled Drive: Engage the self-propelled drive by squeezing the lower bale towards the handle. Adjust your walking speed (approximately 1-4 MPH) by varying the pressure on the bale.
  • Front Wheel Drive: The front-wheel-drive system provides maximum control, especially when maneuvering around obstacles.
  • Mowing Pattern: Mow in overlapping rows. For best results, avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.

4.3 Stopping the Engine

To stop the engine, release the engine brake control bar. The engine will shut off automatically.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your mower. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.

5.1 Engine Maintenance

  • Oil Level: Check the oil level before each use. The Briggs & Stratton EXi725 engine is designed to never require an oil change, only periodic top-offs.
  • Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug annually. Replace if necessary.
  • Fuel System: Use fresh fuel and consider a fuel stabilizer for storage periods.

5.2 Deck and Blade Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Clean the underside of the 14-gauge steel deck after each use to prevent grass buildup, which can affect cutting performance.
  • Blade Sharpening/Replacement: Inspect the blade for sharpness and damage. Sharpen or replace the blade as needed. A dull blade tears grass, leading to an unhealthy lawn.
  • Wheel Maintenance: Keep wheels free of debris and ensure they spin freely.
