Common locations include under a seat, in the trunk, or behind a panel.

3.2. Wiring Connections

Before making any connections, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal.

Memphis Audio PRX1000.1V2 Amplifier power and speaker terminals

Figure 3.1: View of the power and speaker output terminals on the Memphis Audio PRX1000.1V2 amplifier. This side features connections for GND (Ground), REM (Remote Turn-On), +12V (Power), and Speaker Out.

  1. Power Connection (+12V):

Connect a heavy-gauge power wire (e.g., 4 AWG or larger, depending on total system power) directly from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. Install an appropriate fuse holder (rated for the amplifier's current draw) within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.

  2. Ground Connection (GND):

Connect a heavy-gauge ground wire (same gauge as the power wire) from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, solid metal point on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure the contact point is free of paint, rust, or dirt for an effective ground. The ground wire should be as short as possible, ideally less than 3 feet (1 meter).

  3. Remote Turn-On (REM):

Connect a remote turn-on wire (typically 18 AWG) from your head unit's remote output (usually a blue/white wire) to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire signals the amplifier to turn on and off with your head unit.

  4. Speaker Output (SPEAKER OUT):

Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SPEAKER OUT terminals. This is a monoblock amplifier, designed for a single subwoofer or multiple subwoofers wired to present a 1-ohm load for maximum power. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all speaker connections.

  1. RCA Input (INPUT):

Connect RCA cables from your head unit's subwoofer pre-out (or full-range pre-out if no dedicated subwoofer output is available) to the RCA INPUT terminals on the amplifier.

  2. RCA Output (OUTPUT):

The RCA OUTPUT terminals allow you to pass the audio signal to another amplifier in a multi-amplifier setup.

  3. Remote Bass Control (REMOTE):

Connect the included remote bass level control to the REMOTE port. This allows for convenient adjustment of the subwoofer level from the driver's seat.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Initial Power-Up

After all connections are made and verified, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Turn on your head unit. The amplifier should power on, indicated by an illuminated logo or power indicator.

4.2. Adjusting Input Level (Gain)

The INPUT LEVEL control (often referred to as gain) matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output level of your head unit. It is not a volume control.

  1. Turn the amplifier's INPUT LEVEL control to its minimum (fully counter-clockwise) setting.
  2. Set your head unit's volume to about 75-80% of its maximum level.
  3. Play a dynamic piece of music with strong bass content.
  4. Slowly increase the INPUT LEVEL control on the amplifier until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly until the sound is clean.
  5. Avoid setting the gain too high, as this can lead to clipping and damage to your subwoofers.

4.3. REM/DC/Audio Switch

This switch controls how the amplifier turns on:

For most installations with an aftermarket head unit, set this switch to REM.

4.4. Remote Bass Level Control

The remote bass control allows you to adjust the subwoofer output level conveniently from the driver's position without needing to access the amplifier directly.

5. Maintenance

The Memphis Audio PRX1000.1V2 amplifier requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.
