Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. If you are unsure about any steps, consult a qualified electrician or audio installer.

1. Speaker Placement

  • Choose locations in your ceiling or wall that are free from obstructions (e.g., studs, electrical wires, plumbing).
  • Ensure adequate space behind the mounting surface for the speaker depth (approximately 2.76 inches / 7 cm).
  • For stereo sound, position speakers equidistant from the primary listening area.

2. Cutting the Mounting Holes

  • Use the provided template (if available) or measure carefully. The cut-out diameter for the speakers is approximately 5.87 inches (14.9 cm).
  • Carefully cut the holes in the ceiling or wall using an appropriate tool.

3. Wiring the Speakers to the Amplifier

The system includes a 4-channel amplifier. Each speaker requires a positive (+) and negative (-) connection.

  • Run speaker wires from the amplifier location to each speaker mounting hole. Use appropriate gauge speaker wire for the distance.
  • Connect the positive (red) wire from the amplifier to the positive (red) terminal on the speaker.
  • Connect the negative (black) wire from the amplifier to the negative (black) terminal on the speaker.
  • Ensure all connections are secure to prevent short circuits.

4. Installing the Speakers

  • Once wired, insert each speaker into its respective mounting hole.
  • Tighten the mounting screws (typically located on the speaker frame) to engage the dog-leg clamps, securing the speaker firmly to the ceiling or wall. Do not overtighten.
  • Attach the magnetic grilles to the speakers.

1. Power On/Off and Volume Control

  • The large rotary knob on the amplifier serves as both the Master Volume Control and the Power ON/OFF switch.
  • Turn the knob clockwise to power on the unit and increase volume. Turn counter-clockwise to decrease volume and power off.
  • A short press on the knob can also function as Play/Pause for Bluetooth audio.

2. Input Selection

Use the Input Selection switch to choose your desired audio source:

  • BT (Bluetooth): For wireless audio streaming from Bluetooth-enabled devices.
  • STEREO (AUX IN): For connecting external audio devices via the 3.5mm AUX IN jack.
  • MIC (Microphone): For microphone input via the 1/4" MIC IN jack.

3. Bluetooth Pairing

  • Set the Input Selection switch to BT. The Bluetooth Signal LED will illuminate.
  • On your smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device, search for available Bluetooth devices.
  • Select "Herdio" (or similar name) from the list to pair.
  • Once paired, the Bluetooth Signal LED will indicate a successful connection, and you can stream audio wirelessly.
  • The wireless connection range is approximately 30 feet (10 meters).

4. USB Functionality

  • The USB Port functions as a flash memory reader for media playback. Insert a USB drive with audio files.
  • It also serves as a charging port (5V/1A) for your devices.

5. AUX IN Functionality

  • Connect an external audio device (e.g., MP3 player, TV, computer) to the AUX IN (3.5mm) jack using a 3.5mm audio cable.
  • Set the Input Selection switch to STEREO.

6. MIC IN Functionality

  • Connect a microphone to the MIC IN (1/4") jack.
  • Set the Input Selection switch to MIC for microphone paging or audio input.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Herdio speaker system, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the speaker grilles and amplifier faceplate. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the finish.
  • Environment: Install the speakers and amplifier in a dry indoor environment. Avoid areas with high humidity, extreme temperatures, or direct exposure to water, as the product is not waterproof.
  • Grilles: The speaker grilles are paintable. If you choose to paint them, ensure the paint is applied thinly and evenly to avoid clogging the perforations, which could affect sound quality.
  • Connections: Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they remain secure. Loose connections can lead to poor sound quality or intermittent audio.
  • Power: Disconnect the power adapter from the wall outlet if the system will not be used for an extended period.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Herdio speaker system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  1. No Sound Output:
    • Ensure the amplifier is powered on and the Power LED is illuminated.
    • Check the Master Volume knob; turn it clockwise to increase volume.
    • Verify that the correct input source (BT, STEREO, MIC) is selected on the amplifier.
    • Inspect all speaker wire connections at both the amplifier and the speakers for proper polarity and secure contact.
    • Confirm that the audio source device (e.g., phone, tablet) is playing audio and its volume is turned up.
  2. Bluetooth Pairing Issues:
    • Ensure the amplifier's input is set to BT.
    • Make sure your Bluetooth device is within the 30-foot range of the amplifier.
    • Turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices to prevent interference.
    • Forget/remove "Herdio" from your device's Bluetooth list and attempt to re-pair.
    • Restart both the amplifier and your Bluetooth device.
  3. Distorted or Low-Quality Sound:
    • Check speaker wire connections for loose strands or incorrect polarity.
    • Reduce the volume on both the amplifier and the audio source to prevent clipping.
    • Ensure the audio source is providing a clean signal. Try a different audio source or cable.
    • Verify that the speakers are securely mounted and not vibrating against the ceiling/wall.
  4. USB Playback Not Working:
    • Ensure the USB drive is formatted correctly and contains compatible audio files.
    • Try a different USB drive.
  5. Microphone Not Working:
    • Ensure the input selection is set to MIC.
    • Check the microphone connection and ensure the microphone itself is functional.
