2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when installing, operating, or maintaining pool equipment. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the pump is connected to a properly grounded outlet with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not operate the pump if the power cord is damaged.
  • Water and Electricity: Never operate electrical appliances near water or with wet hands. Keep all electrical connections dry.
  • Pressure Warning: The filter operates under high pressure. Do not attempt to open the filter or pump while the system is running. Always turn off the pump and relieve pressure before servicing.
  • Children Safety: Keep children away from pool equipment. Adult supervision is required at all times.
  • Installation: Ensure the system is installed on a level, solid surface to prevent tipping.

3. Setup

Follow these steps for proper installation of your sand filter and pump system.

  1. Placement: Position the filter and pump on a firm, level surface, close to the pool and a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure adequate ventilation and drainage.
  2. Connect Pump to Filter: Attach the pump to the filter tank using the provided hoses and fittings. Ensure all connections are secure and watertight. The system features NPT 1.5 inch internal threads for inlet and outlet connections.
  3. Fill Filter with Sand: Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the filter tank. Place the standpipe inside the tank and carefully pour the recommended amount of filter sand (up to 175 lbs) around the standpipe. Ensure sand is filled between the MIN & MAX lines.
  4. Install Multi-Port Valve: Carefully place the multi-port valve onto the filter tank, ensuring the standpipe aligns correctly with the valve's opening. Secure the valve with the provided clamp or bolts.
  5. Connect to Pool: Connect the pool's skimmer line to the pump's inlet and the pool's return line to the multi-port valve's 'RETURN' port. Connect a waste hose to the 'WASTE' port.
  6. Prime the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump basket is full of water. Open all necessary valves to allow water flow from the pool to the pump.
  7. Electrical Connection: Plug the pump into a GFCI-protected electrical outlet.

4. Operating Instructions

The 7-way multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

  • Filter: This is the standard operating mode for daily filtration. Water flows through the sand, removing debris, and returns to the pool.
  • Backwash: Used to clean the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the filter, flushing accumulated debris out through the waste port. Perform when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure.
  • Rinse: After backwashing, this mode settles the sand and flushes any remaining dirty water from the valve to the waste port before returning to filter mode.
  • Recirculate: Bypasses the filter, circulating water directly back to the pool. Useful for chemical distribution without filtering.
  • Waste: Drains water directly from the pool through the waste port, bypassing the filter. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • Winter: Used for winterizing the filter system.
  • Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use only when servicing the pump or filter.

Monitor the built-in pressure gauge for optimal performance. A rising pressure indicates the need for backwashing.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your XtremepowerUS filter system.

  • Backwashing: Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge indicates a rise of 8-10 PSI above its normal clean operating pressure. Follow the 'Backwash' and 'Rinse' steps in the operating instructions.
  • Strainer Basket Cleaning: Periodically check and clean the pump's strainer basket. Turn off the pump, close necessary valves, and remove the transparent lid to access the basket. Remove any debris and replace the basket and lid securely.
  • Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs replacement every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Refer to the setup section for instructions on filling the filter with new sand.
  • Winterizing: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the pump and filter. Set the multi-port valve to 'WINTER' position. Store the pump in a dry, protected area if possible.

6. Troubleshooting

Below are common issues and potential solutions for your filter system.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low Water FlowClogged strainer basket, dirty filter sand, air leak in suction line, low water level in pool.Clean strainer basket, backwash/rinse filter, check all connections for leaks, ensure adequate pool water level.
Water Not ClearingInsufficient filtration time, dirty filter sand, incorrect chemical balance, undersized system.Increase run time, backwash/rinse filter, check and adjust pool chemistry, ensure proper sand level.
Pump Not StartingNo power, tripped GFCI, motor issue.Check power supply and GFCI, consult an electrician if motor hums but doesn't start.
Water LeakingLoose connections, damaged O-rings/gaskets.Tighten all connections, inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets as needed.
