2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the speakers from their packaging. Ensure all components are present. The box should contain:

  • Klipsch RSM-650 Indoor/Outdoor Speakers (Pair)
  • Mounting Brackets
  • Grilles with set screws

2.2 Placement Considerations

The RSM-650 speakers are designed for both indoor and outdoor use. When selecting a location, consider the following:

  • Outdoor Use: Due to their IPX6 rating, these speakers are resistant to water jets and rain. Mount them in areas where they can provide optimal sound coverage, such as patios, decks, or outdoor kitchens.
  • Indoor Use: For indoor installations, position the speakers to achieve the desired sound dispersion.
  • Mounting Surface: Ensure the mounting surface is sturdy enough to support the weight of the speakers (approximately 25.6 pounds per pair). The recommended mounting type is wall mount.

2.3 Mounting the Speakers

The speakers come with integrated mounting brackets. Follow these general steps for wall mounting:

  1. Determine the optimal mounting height and angle for sound dispersion.
  2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark drilling locations on the wall.
  3. Drill pilot holes and secure the mounting bracket to the wall using appropriate hardware (not included, ensure it's suitable for your wall type and speaker weight).
  4. Attach the speaker to the secured mounting bracket. The bracket allows for adjustment of the speaker angle.

2.4 Connecting the Speakers

The Klipsch RSM Series speakers employ dual 5-way binding posts for audio connections. Use high-quality speaker wire for optimal performance.

  1. Strip approximately 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of your speaker wire.
  2. Unscrew the binding post terminals on the back of the speaker.
  3. Insert the bare wire into the hole in the binding post. Ensure positive (+) from the amplifier connects to positive (+) on the speaker, and negative (-) to negative (-).
  4. Tighten the binding post terminals securely to ensure a good connection.
  5. Connect the other end of the speaker wire to your amplifier or receiver, maintaining correct polarity.

3. Operation

3.1 Powering On and Audio Playback

Once the speakers are properly installed and connected to an amplifier or receiver, you can begin audio playback.

  1. Ensure your amplifier/receiver is powered on and set to the correct input source.
  2. Start playing audio from your desired device. Compatible devices include Desktop, Laptop, MP3 Player, Projector, Smartphone, Tablet, and Television.
  3. Adjust the volume on your amplifier/receiver to a comfortable listening level.

3.2 Control Method

The primary control method for these speakers is through the connected audio source (e.g., amplifier, receiver, or directly from a device if it has volume control). The speakers themselves do not have integrated touch controls for audio playback.

4. Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Klipsch RSM-650 speakers.

4.1 Cleaning

  • For general cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the speaker enclosure and grille.
  • For outdoor installations, if the speakers become dirty, you can gently wipe them with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the finish or components.
  • The IPX6 rating means they are resistant to strong water jets, but avoid submerging the speakers or directing high-pressure water directly at the drivers.

4.2 Grille Maintenance

The grilles are secured with set screws. Periodically check these screws to ensure they remain tight, especially in environments with vibrations or extreme weather changes.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Klipsch RSM-650 speakers, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound
  • Incorrect wiring polarity.
  • Loose speaker wire connections.
  • Amplifier/receiver off or incorrect input selected.
  • Source device not playing audio.
  • Verify positive (+) and negative (-) connections at both speaker and amplifier.
  • Ensure all speaker wire connections are tight.
  • Check amplifier/receiver power and input settings.
  • Confirm audio is playing from the source device.
Distorted Sound
  • Volume too high.
  • Damaged speaker wire.
  • Amplifier clipping.
  • Reduce volume on amplifier/receiver.
  • Inspect speaker wire for damage and replace if necessary.
  • Ensure amplifier power output matches speaker requirements.
One Speaker Not Working
  • Loose connection to that specific speaker.
  • Faulty speaker wire.
  • Check connections for the non-working speaker.
  • Swap speaker wires between working and non-working speakers to isolate the issue (speaker vs. wire).
