4. Operating Instructions

The ANCEL AD310BT offers a user-friendly interface through its dedicated smartphone application. Below are the primary functions and how to use them.

4.1 Diagnostic Menu Navigation

After connecting the scanner and pairing with the app, the main diagnostic menu will appear. Use the physical buttons on the scanner (Up, Down, Enter, Exit) to navigate through the menu options displayed on the scanner's screen, or use the touch interface within the smartphone application.

  • Read Codes: Retrieves Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the vehicle's computer.
  • Erase Codes: Clears DTCs from the vehicle's computer. This will also turn off the Check Engine Light.
  • Live Data: Displays real-time sensor data from the vehicle.
  • View Freeze Frame: Shows a snapshot of vehicle operating conditions at the time an emission-related fault occurred.
  • I/M Readiness: Checks the status of the emission-related monitoring systems.
  • Vehicle Info: Retrieves vehicle identification number (VIN), calibration ID, and calibration verification number (CVN).

4.2 Reading and Clearing Trouble Codes

  1. From the main menu, select "Read Codes" to retrieve current, pending, or permanent DTCs.
  2. The scanner will display the codes and their descriptions.
  3. To clear codes, select "Erase Codes" from the main menu. Confirm the action when prompted. Clearing codes will turn off the Check Engine Light.

4.3 I/M Readiness Testing

The I/M Readiness function checks if the various emission-related systems on the vehicle are operating correctly and have completed their diagnostic cycles. This is crucial for emissions inspections.

  1. Select "I/M Readiness" from the main menu.
  2. The app will display the status of various monitors (e.g., Misfire, Fuel System, O2 Sensor). A "PASS" or "OK" status indicates the monitor has completed its test.
  3. Note: Some monitors may require specific driving conditions to complete their tests.

4.4 Voltage Indicator and Battery Testing

The AD310BT features an LED indicator that displays the vehicle's battery voltage when connected. The application also provides a dedicated battery testing function.

  • Voltage Indicator: The LED on the scanner unit will show the current battery voltage. This can be used for a quick check of the battery and alternator. A healthy alternator should show voltage between approximately 12.6V and 14.0V when the engine is running.
  • Battery Testing: Use the dedicated battery test function within the app to get a more detailed analysis of your vehicle's battery status. This helps in identifying potential issues before they lead to cold-weather starting problems or roadside breakdowns.

4.5 EVAP System Testing

The EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control System) test function allows you to initiate a leak test for the vehicle's EVAP system. This helps to detect fuel vapor leaks that can affect emissions.

4.6 DTC Search

The DTC Search function allows you to look up the meaning of Diagnostic Trouble Codes directly within the application, providing immediate context for any issues detected.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the scanner unit. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a clean, dry environment away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight when not in use.
  • Software Updates: Periodically check the ANCEL AD310BT application for software updates to ensure optimal performance and compatibility with newer vehicle models.
  • Cable Care: Avoid bending or twisting the OBD2 cable excessively to prevent internal damage.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Scanner does not power on:
    • Ensure the scanner is securely plugged into the vehicle's OBD2 port.
    • Verify the vehicle's ignition is in the ON position.
    • Check the vehicle's battery for sufficient charge.
  • Cannot connect to smartphone via Bluetooth:
    • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.
    • Make sure the ANCEL AD310BT app is open and attempting to connect.
    • Try restarting both the scanner (by unplugging and replugging) and your smartphone.
    • Ensure no other devices are actively connected to the scanner via Bluetooth.
  • App displays "No Communication" or similar error:
    • Verify the scanner is properly connected to the vehicle's DLC.
    • Ensure the vehicle's ignition is ON.
    • Confirm the vehicle is OBD2 compliant (most vehicles manufactured after 1996 in the US are).
    • Try connecting to a different OBD2 compliant vehicle if available, to rule out a vehicle-specific issue.
  • Inaccurate readings or intermittent connection:
    • Check for loose connections at the OBD2 port.
    • Ensure the smartphone app is up to date.
    • Avoid using the scanner in areas with strong electromagnetic interference.
