1. Introduction
This user manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your FOTING 13in Sand Filter Pump. Designed for above-ground pools, this system ensures efficient and thorough water filtration, contributing to a clean and clear swimming environment. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the pump to ensure safe and optimal performance.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when installing, operating, or maintaining your pool pump. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or property damage.
- Ensure the pump is connected to a properly grounded electrical outlet with a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for electrical safety.
- Do not operate the pump if the power cord or plug is damaged.
- Never run the pump dry. Ensure the pump is fully primed with water before starting to prevent damage.
- Keep children and pets away from the pump and filter system during operation.
- Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any maintenance or service.
- Follow all local electrical and plumbing codes during installation.
3. Product Components
The FOTING 13in Sand Filter Pump system includes the following main components:
- Sand Filter Tank
- Pool Pump (3/4 HP)
- 6-Way Multi-Port Valve
- Pressure Gauge
- Strainer Basket (pre-filter)
- Connecting Hoses and Fittings

4. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the efficient operation of your sand filter pump. Refer to the included assembly diagrams for detailed steps.
- Placement: Position the filter pump on a firm, level surface, as close to the pool as possible to minimize hose length and maximize efficiency. Ensure it is protected from direct sunlight and adverse weather conditions.
- Sand Filling: Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the tank. Carefully fill the tank with the recommended amount of filter sand (approximately 70 lbs) or 2.2 lbs of filter balls. Ensure the standpipe is centered during filling.
- Valve Installation: Securely attach the 6-way multi-port valve to the top of the filter tank, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated and connections are tight.
- Hose Connections: Connect the pool's skimmer line to the pump's inlet, and the pump's outlet to the filter tank's inlet. Connect the filter tank's return line to the pool's return jet. Ensure all connections are sealed to prevent leaks. The system supports 1-1/4" PVC hoses.
- Priming the Pump: Before starting, fill the pump's strainer basket housing with water until it overflows. Replace the lid securely. This primes the pump and prevents dry running.
- Electrical Connection: Connect the pump to a dedicated, grounded electrical outlet with GFCI protection.

5. Operating Instructions: 6-Way Valve Functions
The 6-way multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve positions to prevent damage.
Figure 5.1: The 6-Way Valve provides multiple functions for comprehensive pool maintenance.
- 1. FILTER: Normal filtering mode. Water flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool. This is the primary operating mode.
- 2. BACKWASH: Used for cleaning the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the sand bed, flushing trapped debris out through the waste port. Backwash until the water runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- 3. RINSE: Used after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water from the valve. Run for 30-60 seconds.
- 4. WASTE: Bypasses the filter and pumps water directly out of the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering the pool water level.
- 5. CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use this setting only when the pump is off and you are performing maintenance on the pump or filter.
- 6. RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for mixing chemicals without filtering.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your FOTING sand filter pump.
- Backwashing: Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water flow to the pool decreases significantly.
- Strainer Basket Cleaning: Periodically inspect and clean the pump's strainer basket. Turn off the pump, close necessary valves, remove the basket lid, empty debris, and rinse the basket.
- Sand/Filter Ball Replacement: Filter sand typically needs replacement every 3-5 years, depending on usage. Filter balls may last longer but should be cleaned or replaced as needed.
- Winterization: In colder climates, properly winterize the pump and filter system to prevent freezing damage. Drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses. Store the pump in a dry, protected area.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FOTING sand filter pump, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pump not starting | No power; tripped GFCI; motor issue | Check power supply, reset GFCI. If motor hums but doesn't start, contact support. |
| Low water flow / Poor filtration | Clogged strainer basket; dirty filter sand; air leak in suction line; low water level in pool | Clean strainer basket; backwash/rinse filter; check all connections for air leaks; ensure adequate pool water level. |
| Water leaking from pump/filter | Loose connections; damaged O-rings/gaskets; cracked housing | Tighten all connections; inspect and replace damaged O-rings/gaskets; if housing is cracked, replacement may be necessary. |
| Pump making loud noise | Air in system; cavitation; worn bearings | Check for air leaks in suction line; ensure pump is fully primed. If noise persists, motor may require professional service. |
