2. Setup and Installation
Your First Alert SMCO500V alarm is designed for straightforward installation. Ensure you have the necessary tools: a drill, screwdriver, and the included screws and anchors.
2.1 Unboxing and Components
Upon opening the package, verify all components are present: the alarm unit, mounting bracket, screws, and AA batteries.

2.2 Battery Installation
Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Insert the two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely.
2.3 Mounting the Alarm
Select an appropriate location for the alarm. For optimal protection, install combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, including basements, and in every bedroom. Avoid placing alarms in kitchens or bathrooms where steam or cooking fumes might cause nuisance alarms. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark screw holes on the ceiling or wall. Drill pilot holes, insert anchors if necessary, and secure the mounting bracket with the provided screws. Attach the alarm unit to the mounting bracket by twisting it clockwise until it locks into place.

2.4 Interconnect Feature
The SMCO500V features an early warning interconnect system. When one compatible First Alert alarm sounds, all other compatible alarms in your system will also sound. Refer to the product manual for detailed instructions on connecting multiple units.

3. Operating the Alarm
