1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your JBL MA1000 Marine Mono Subwoofer Amplifier. The MA1000 is designed to deliver high-performance audio in marine environments, featuring a Class D amplifier design for efficient power delivery and minimal current draw. It is capable of providing 600 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms, with a maximum power output of 2000 watts, and a frequency response range of 25-320 Hz.
Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting installation or operation to ensure proper use and to prevent damage to the unit or your vessel's audio system.

3. Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of your amplifier. It is recommended that installation be performed by a qualified marine audio technician.
3.1 Mounting Location
The JBL MA1000 features a compact size and low-profile chassis, allowing for flexible mounting in various marine vehicles where space is limited. Choose a location that is:
- Secure and protected from direct water exposure.
- Well-ventilated to prevent overheating.
- Accessible for wiring and adjustments.
- Away from fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wiring that could cause interference.
Use the provided mounting screws (M4 x 53mm) to secure the amplifier firmly to a solid surface.

3.2 Wiring Connections
Ensure the vessel's battery is disconnected before making any electrical connections.
- Power Connection: Connect the +12V terminal to the positive terminal of the vessel's battery using appropriate gauge wiring. Connect the GND terminal to a clean, solid chassis ground point. Connect the REM (Remote) terminal to the remote turn-on output of your marine head unit.
- Speaker-Level Inputs: The amplifier supports both high-level (speaker-level) and low-level (RCA) inputs. For high-level inputs, use the provided bare wire-to-RCA adapters to connect directly to your marine stereo's speaker outputs. This allows integration with factory marine stereo systems.
- Low-Level Inputs (RCA): For aftermarket marine stereos with RCA pre-outs, connect RCA cables from the head unit's subwoofer output to the amplifier's PRIMARY INPUT (RCA) jacks.
- Subwoofer Output: Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SUB output terminals, observing correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The MA1000 is a mono amplifier, designed for a single subwoofer or multiple subwoofers wired to present a suitable impedance.
- Remote Bass Control: Connect the remote bass control module to the REMOTE CONTROL port using the provided RJ-25 cable. Mount the remote module in an accessible location using the self-tapping screws.

4. Operation
Once installed, the JBL MA1000 amplifier offers several controls for fine-tuning your audio system.

Figure 3: Top view of the JBL MA1000 amplifier with the protective cover removed, revealing the control panel for input level, crossover, bass boost, and phase settings.
4.1 Input Level Control
This control adjusts the input sensitivity of the amplifier to match the output level of your marine stereo. Proper setting prevents distortion and ensures maximum dynamic range.
- Low-Level Inputs (RCA): Adjust the input sensitivity between 200mVrms and 4Vrms.
- High-Level Inputs (Speaker-Level): Adjust the input sensitivity between 1Vrms and 22Vrms.
To set the input level, turn the control to its minimum position. Play a dynamic piece of music through your marine stereo at about 75% of its maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's input level control until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly until the sound is clear.
4.2 Variable Crossover and Bass Boost
The MA1000 features variable electronic crossovers and bass boost circuits for precise system tuning.
- Low-Pass Filter (LPF): Adjust the LPF to control the upper frequency limit of the subwoofer. This ensures that only low frequencies are sent to the subwoofer, preventing it from playing higher frequencies that should be handled by full-range speakers. A common starting point is 80-100 Hz.
- Bass Boost: Use the bass boost control to enhance low-frequency output. Start with the boost at its minimum setting and increase gradually if more bass is desired. Excessive bass boost can lead to distortion and potential speaker damage.
4.3 Phase Switch
The phase switch (0° or 180°) helps to ensure that the subwoofer's output blends seamlessly with your full-range speakers. Experiment with both settings to determine which provides the most cohesive and impactful bass response in your listening environment.
4.4 Remote Bass Control
The remote bass control module allows for convenient adjustment of the subwoofer's output level from your listening position, without needing to access the amplifier directly.
5. Maintenance
The JBL MA1000 is designed for marine environments, but regular maintenance helps ensure its longevity and performance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the unit is powered off and disconnected before cleaning.
- Connections: Regularly check all wiring connections for corrosion, looseness, or damage. Tighten any loose connections and clean any corrosion to maintain optimal electrical contact.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's ventilation fins are clear of obstructions to allow for proper heat dissipation.
- Fuses: The amplifier uses 35A ATO fuses. If a fuse blows, replace it only with a fuse of the same type and rating. Using an incorrect fuse can damage the amplifier or create a fire hazard.
6. Troubleshooting
The JBL MA1000 features full on-board protection circuitry to safeguard against common issues. An LED indicator is provided to signal when a protection condition exists.
