4.2 Using the CHI Original Ceramic Hair Straightener
- Turn the flat iron ON using the analog switch. The indicator light will illuminate.
- Allow the iron to heat up to the desired temperature. The maximum temperature is 392°F (202°C).
- Section your hair into manageable portions, approximately 1-2 inches wide.
- For Straightening:
- Take one section of hair and place it between the ceramic plates, close to the roots.
- Gently clamp the plates together and glide the iron slowly and steadily down the entire length of the hair section, from roots to ends.
- Repeat on other sections until desired straightness is achieved. Avoid passing over the same section too many times to prevent heat damage.
- For Curling or Waving:
- Take one section of hair and clamp it between the plates, about halfway down the section.
- Rotate the iron 180 degrees (either towards or away from your face) and gently pull the iron downwards through the hair, maintaining the rotation.
- The speed at which you pull the iron will determine the tightness of the curl or wave. Slower movements create tighter curls, faster movements create looser waves.
- Alternatively, you can wrap sections of hair around the outside of the closed iron and hold for a few seconds before releasing for soft curls.
- After styling, turn the flat iron OFF using the analog switch and unplug it from the outlet.
- Allow the iron to cool completely before storing.

- Ensure the iron is completely dry before storing or next use.
5.2 Storage
- Store the cooled flat iron in a dry, safe place, away from moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Do not wrap the power cord tightly around the appliance, as this can cause stress and damage to the cord.
5.3 Thermal Protection Spray Care
- Store the spray bottle in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
- Ensure the cap is securely closed after each use.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Flat iron does not heat up. | Not plugged in, power switch off, or power outlet issue. | Ensure the iron is securely plugged into a working outlet. Check that the ON/OFF switch is in the 'ON' position. Test the outlet with another appliance. |
| Hair is pulling or snagging. | Hair is tangled, plates are dirty, or iron is not gliding smoothly. | Ensure hair is thoroughly detangled before styling. Clean the ceramic plates as per maintenance instructions. Ensure you are not clamping too tightly or moving too quickly. |
| Iron automatically shuts off too soon. | Normal operation (1-hour auto shut-off). | The iron has a safety feature that turns it off after 1 hour of inactivity. Simply turn the switch OFF and then ON again to resume use. |
| Hair feels dry or damaged after use. | Excessive heat, no thermal protection, or too many passes. | Always use the CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray. Avoid using the highest heat setting if not necessary for your hair type. Do not pass the iron over the same section of hair too many times. Ensure hair is completely dry before styling. |
