Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to assemble your Raspberry Pi 5 into the Vilros Turbo Cooled MAX Wave Case. For a visual guide, please refer to the embedded video below.

  1. Prepare the Case: Open the case by unscrewing the four screws on the bottom. Separate the top and bottom parts of the case.
  2. Install On/Off Button: Ensure the on/off button is correctly seated in its designated slot in the bottom part of the case. Verify that the screw holes on the button and case align.
  3. Apply Thermal Pad: Remove the protective sticker from one side of the thermal conductive pad. Carefully apply this side of the pad onto the chip contact point located on the inside of the top part of the case, directly above where the Raspberry Pi's main chip will sit. Once applied, remove the sticker from the other side of the pad.
  4. Insert Raspberry Pi 5 Board: Gently insert the Raspberry Pi 5 board into the bottom part of the case, ensuring all ports align with the case cutouts.
  5. Connect Fan Cable: Plug the fan cable from the case into the fan port on the Raspberry Pi 5 board.
  6. Close the Case: Place the top cover over the board, aligning it with the bottom part. Secure the case using the four screws. Tighten them until the case is firmly closed.
  7. Optional SD Card Cover: If you wish to block SD card access for security or to prevent accidental removal, insert the SD card into the Raspberry Pi 5, then place the included silicone SD card cover over the SD card slot.
  8. Optional Soft Feet: Apply the included soft silicone feet to the bottom of the case if desired, to prevent scratching surfaces and provide additional stability.

Video Guide: Vilros Pi 5 Wave Case Installation

This video demonstrates the step-by-step installation of the Raspberry Pi 5 board into the Vilros Wave Case, including thermal pad application and fan connection.

Operating Your Raspberry Pi 5

Your Vilros Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit comes with a 128GB Micro SD card pre-loaded with Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit), allowing for immediate use. Simply connect your peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor - not included) and power on the device.

Initial Boot-up

Upon first boot, the Raspberry Pi OS will guide you through a setup wizard to configure language, keyboard layout, time zone, and network settings. You may also be prompted to update the software, which is recommended for optimal performance and security.

Common Uses

The Raspberry Pi 5 is a versatile single-board computer suitable for various applications:

  • Desktop Computer Replacement: Perform everyday computing tasks.
  • Retro Gaming Setups: Emulate classic game consoles.
  • Building Web Servers: Host websites or web applications.
  • Home Automation: Control smart devices and create custom automation routines.
  • Coding and Development: Learn programming languages and develop custom projects.
  • Media Center: Stream audio and visual content.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Raspberry Pi 5.

Cooling System

The Vilros MAX Wave case provides both passive and active cooling. The aluminum alloy case acts as a large heatsink, dissipating heat passively. The integrated PWM fan provides active cooling, activating as needed to maintain optimal operating temperatures. Ensure the fan vents are not obstructed to allow for proper airflow.

Software Updates

Regularly update your Raspberry Pi OS and installed software to benefit from the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches. This can typically be done via the terminal using commands like sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade.

Cleaning

Periodically clean the case and fan to prevent dust buildup, which can hinder cooling efficiency. Use a soft, dry cloth for the case and compressed air for the fan and vents.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Raspberry Pi 5, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power/Boot: Double-check all power connections. Ensure the USB-C power supply is correctly plugged in and providing sufficient power (Vilros 27W 5V/5A recommended). Verify the SD card is properly inserted.
  • No Display: Ensure HDMI cables are securely connected to both the Raspberry Pi and the monitor. Try a different HDMI port or cable. Confirm the monitor is set to the correct input source.
  • Overheating: Check that the case fan is spinning when the device is under load. Ensure no obstructions are blocking the case vents. Verify the thermal pad is correctly installed and making contact with the main chip.
  • Peripheral Issues: If a keyboard, mouse, or other USB device is not working, try connecting it to a different USB port. Ensure the device is compatible with Raspberry Pi OS.
  • Software Problems: If software issues persist, try reinstalling the Raspberry Pi OS on your Micro SD card using the provided USB MicroSD Card Reader and the official Raspberry Pi Imager tool.
