4. Installation

4.1 Physical Installation

The XMTE-3000 series controllers are designed for panel mounting. Ensure adequate space for ventilation and wiring connections.

Figure 1: Physical dimensions of the RWRAPS XMTE-3000 PID Temperature Controller. The front panel measures approximately 72mm x 72mm, and the depth is approximately 68mm. Mounting brackets are included for secure installation.

Cut a panel opening of approximately 68mm x 68mm and insert the controller. Secure it using the provided mounting brackets.

4.2 Electrical Wiring

All wiring should be performed by a qualified electrician and in accordance with local electrical codes. Ensure power is disconnected before making any connections.

Figure 3: Rear view of the RWRAPS XMTE-3000 PID Temperature Controller showing the screw terminal blocks for electrical connections.

Refer to the wiring diagram (Figure 2) and the terminal block (Figure 3) for correct connections:

  • Power Supply (100-240VAC): Connect to terminals 1 and 2.
  • Alarm Outputs (ALM1, ALM2): Connect alarm devices to terminals 3, 4 (ALM2) and 9, 10, 11 (ALM1). Consult the specific model's detailed diagram for alarm relay configurations.
  • Main Output (OUT): Connect your heating/cooling element or SSR to terminals 5, 6, 7. For relay output models, these are typically relay contacts. For SSR output models, these provide a control voltage for an external SSR.
  • Sensor Input:
    • Thermocouple (TC) Input (K-type, E-type): Connect to terminals 13 and 14. Ensure correct polarity.
    • RTD Input: Connect to terminals 12, 13, and 14 for 3-wire RTD.

Verify all connections are secure before applying power.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Initial Power-Up

Upon applying power, the controller will perform a self-test and then display the current process value (PV) and the set value (SV). The dual display allows for easy monitoring.

5.2 Setting the Temperature (Set Value - SV)

The controller features a simplified one-key operation for setting the target temperature. Typically, a dedicated 'SET' or 'MODE' button allows you to enter the set value adjustment mode. Use the arrow keys (Up/Down) to adjust the SV to your desired temperature. Press 'SET' or 'MODE' again to confirm and exit the setting mode.

5.3 PID Parameter Adjustment (Advanced Users)

For optimal control performance, the PID parameters (Proportional band 'P', Integral time 'I', Derivative time 'D') may need adjustment. Accessing these parameters usually involves holding down a specific key (e.g., 'SET' or 'FUNC') for several seconds to enter the parameter menu. Consult the detailed programming guide (if provided separately) for specific parameter definitions and adjustment procedures. Incorrect PID settings can lead to unstable temperature control.

  • P (Proportional Band): Controls the output power in proportion to the difference between PV and SV.
  • I (Integral Time): Eliminates steady-state errors (offset) by adjusting the output based on the duration and magnitude of the error.
  • D (Derivative Time): Responds to the rate of change of the error, helping to prevent overshoot and undershoot.

5.4 Alarm Settings

The controller supports multiple alarm functions (ALM1, ALM2). These can be configured for high/low limits, deviation alarms, or band alarms. Refer to the controller's display menu for setting alarm types and values.

6. Maintenance

The RWRAPS XMTE-3000 series PID Temperature Controller is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure longevity:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the front panel with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Environment: Ensure the operating environment is free from excessive dust, moisture, corrosive gases, and strong electromagnetic interference.
  • Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for tightness, especially in environments with vibration.
  • Calibration: While factory calibrated, if accuracy issues arise, professional recalibration may be required.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your temperature controller, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display/No powerNo power supply; incorrect wiring; blown fuse.Check power connections (Terminals 1 & 2). Verify power source. Check internal fuse if accessible (consult service manual).
Temperature reading inaccurate or "HHHH" / "LLLL" displayedSensor disconnected; incorrect sensor type selected; faulty sensor; incorrect wiring polarity.Check sensor connections (Terminals 12-14). Ensure sensor type matches controller settings (K-type, E-type, RTD). Replace sensor if faulty. Verify thermocouple polarity.
Output not activating/deactivatingIncorrect output wiring; faulty relay/SSR; control parameters set incorrectly; temperature not reaching set point.Check output wiring (Terminals 5-7). Verify external relay/SSR operation. Review PID parameters and set point. Ensure heating/cooling element is functional.
Unstable temperature control (overshoot/undershoot)PID parameters not tuned correctly for the system.Adjust PID parameters (P, I, D). Consider using auto-tuning function if available (consult specific model's manual).

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact RWRAPS customer support.
