Compatibility chart for the Kasa Smart KS240 switch, showing requirements for separate load wires, LED (150W Max), Halogen & Incandescent (300W Max), AC Motor Speed Control Fan (1.5A, Less than 60W), and incompatibilities with exhaust fans, DC motor fans, and fans with integrated speed controls.

Figure 5.1: Kasa Smart KS240 Compatibility

  • Separate Load Wires: Your ceiling fan and light must have separate load wires for independent control.
  • Neutral Wire: A neutral wire (typically white) is required in your wall box.
  • Wi-Fi Network: A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network is necessary for smart functionality.
  • Fan Type: Compatible with AC motor speed control fans (1.5A, less than 60W).
  • Light Type: Supports LED (150W Max) and Halogen/Incandescent (300W Max) bulbs.
  • Incompatible: Not compatible with exhaust fans, DC motor fans, or ceiling fans with integrated remote control/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi speed controls.

6. Installation Guide

Before proceeding, ensure power is OFF at the circuit breaker to avoid electric shock.

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate your circuit breaker and turn off the power to the switch you are replacing. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove Old Switch: Unscrew and carefully remove the existing wall plate and switch from the wall box.
  3. Identify Wires: Label each wire connected to your old switch. Common wires include Line (hot), Load (to fan/light), Neutral, and Ground. The Kasa app provides an app-guided installation to assist with wire identification.
  4. Connect Kasa Smart Switch: Connect the wires from your wall box to the corresponding wires on the Kasa Smart Switch using the provided wire nuts. Refer to the wiring diagram below. Ensure all connections are secure.

9. Maintenance

  • Clean the switch with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners.
  • Ensure the wall plate is securely fastened to prevent dust and debris from entering the switch mechanism.
  • Regularly check for firmware updates via the Kasa Smart app to ensure optimal performance and security.

10. Troubleshooting

10.1 Switch Not Responding / LED Flashing Red

  • Check Power: Ensure the circuit breaker is on and the switch is receiving power.
  • Wi-Fi Connection: Verify your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network is active and the switch is within range. Re-attempt setup in the Kasa app if necessary.
  • Neutral Wire: Confirm the neutral wire is correctly connected. This is essential for the switch to function.

10.2 Light Not Dimming Properly

  • Bulb Compatibility: Ensure your LED bulbs are dimmable. Some LED bulbs may not dim effectively or may flicker.
  • Load Limits: Verify the total wattage of your lights does not exceed the 150W (LED) or 300W (Halogen/Incandescent) maximum.
  • App Calibration: Use the Kasa Smart app to calibrate the minimum and maximum dimming levels for your specific bulbs.

10.3 Fan Not Responding / Incorrect Speed

  • Fan Type: Confirm your fan is an AC motor speed control fan and not an incompatible type (e.g., DC motor, integrated smart control).
  • Fan Pull Chain: Ensure your ceiling fan's pull chain is set to its highest speed setting. The Kasa switch controls the speed from there.
  • Load Limits: Verify the fan's current draw does not exceed 1.5A (less than 60W).

10.4 Accidental Factory Reset

  • The switch can be factory reset by holding either the fan or light button for 5 seconds. If this occurs accidentally, you will need to re-add the device to the Kasa Smart app.
