3. Setup and Installation

Installation of the Bestechy Smart Thermostat typically takes less than 30 minutes. Please follow these steps carefully. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified HVAC professional.

3.1 Pre-Installation Steps

  1. Turn off Power: Before beginning any installation, switch the power to your HVAC system to the OFF position at your circuit breaker. This is a critical safety step.
  2. Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove your old thermostat from the wall. Do not disconnect any wires yet.
  3. Photograph Wiring: Take a clear picture of your old thermostat's wiring connections. This photo will serve as a reference for connecting the new thermostat.
  4. Label Wires: Use the provided wire label stickers from the packaging box to mark each wire according to its terminal on the old thermostat (e.g., R for Red, G for Green, Y/Y1 for Yellow, W/W1 for White, C for Blue).
  5. Remove Old Backplate: Once all wires are labeled, disconnect them from the old thermostat's backplate and remove the backplate from the wall. Ensure the wires do not fall back into the wall.

3.2 C-Wire Adapter Installation (If your old thermostat lacks a C-wire)

If your existing thermostat wiring does not include a C-wire (common wire), the included C-wire adapter is required for continuous power. Follow these steps:

Video 1: Detailed guide on installing the Bestechy Smart Thermostat without an existing C-wire, including the use of the C-wire adapter.

  1. Locate HVAC Control Unit: Find your HVAC control unit (furnace or air handler). Open its cover. Take a photo of its wiring diagram for future reference.
  2. Label Control Board Wires: Label the wires connected to the control board terminals (R, G, Y/Y1, W/W1, C) using adhesive tags.
  3. Disconnect Wires from Control Board: Disconnect the W/W1, Y/Y1, R, and G wires from the control board.
  4. Connect Wires to C-Wire Adapter: Connect the disconnected wires to the corresponding ports on the 4-port C-wire adapter:
    • R wire to RC terminal
    • W/W1 wire to W terminal
    • G wire to C terminal
    • Y/Y1 wire to S terminal
  5. Connect C-Wire Adapter to Control Board: Use the provided short wires from the C-wire adapter to connect back to the HVAC control board:
    • Connect the wire from the adapter's RC port to the R terminal on the control board.
    • Connect the wire from the adapter's W port to the W/W1 terminal on the control board.
    • Connect the wire from the adapter's C port to the G terminal on the control board.
    • Connect the wire from the adapter's S port to the Y/Y1 terminal on the control board.

Note: The C-wire adapter is magnetically fixed and can be attached to the inner wall of the heat pump host.

  6. Update Thermostat Wiring Labels: Go back to the thermostat location. Based on the new connections made with the C-wire adapter, re-label the wires at the thermostat end:
    • Original R/RC/RH wire becomes RC
    • Original G wire becomes C
    • Original Y/Y1 wire becomes S

3.3 Thermostat Installation (With C-wire or after adapter installation)

If your old thermostat already had a C-wire, or after completing the C-wire adapter installation, proceed with these steps:

Video 2: Installation guide for the Bestechy Smart Thermostat when an existing C-wire is available.

  1. Install New Backplate: Open the backplate of the new thermostat. Install it on the wall using the provided screws and anchors. Ensure the "UP" or "↑" orientation indicated on the backplate is correct.
  2. Connect Wires to New Thermostat: Connect the labeled wires from your wall to the corresponding terminals on the new thermostat's backplate. Refer to the labels you made earlier and the wiring diagram in the user guide.
  3. Set RC/RH Switch: If you have connected the RC or RH wire to the wall plate, toggle the switch on the back of the thermostat to "Disconnected". Otherwise, switch it to "Connected".
  4. Attach Thermostat: Carefully attach the thermostat display unit onto the installed backplate. It should click securely into place.
  5. Restore Power: Go back to your circuit breaker and switch the power to your HVAC system back to the ON position.
  6. Initial Setup: Once the thermostat screen lights up, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the initial setup, including system type and fan control.
