Setup

1. Battery Installation and Charging

1. Install Battery: Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it upwards until it clicks into place. To remove, press the release latch and slide the battery downwards.
2. Charge Battery: Connect the provided USB-C cable to the charging port on the back of the battery. Connect the other end to a USB power source (e.g., car charger, power bank, laptop, or wall adapter). The charging indicator on the radio or battery will show charging status. A full charge typically takes several hours.

2. Antenna Attachment

Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

3. Speaker Microphone Attachment

Insert the 2-pin plug of the speaker microphone into the 2-pin jack on the side of the radio. Ensure it is securely connected.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume Control

• Power On: Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click. The LCD screen will illuminate.
• Adjust Volume: Continue rotating the Power/Volume knob to adjust the audio level.
• Power Off: Rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.

2. Frequency Mode (VFO) and Channel Mode (MR)

• Press the VFO/MR button to switch between Frequency Mode (VFO) for direct frequency input and Channel Mode (MR) for selecting pre-programmed channels.

3. One-Key Frequency Matching

This feature allows for quick frequency synchronization with another radio:

1. Step 1: Initiate Search. Turn on your radio. Press and hold the VFO/MR button until the screen displays "SEARCH".
2. Step 2: Transmit from Other Radio. Press and hold the transmit (PTT) button on the other radio you wish to match. Your UV-5RM will search for and display its frequency and decode information.
3. Step 3: Confirm and Communicate. Once the search is complete and the frequency is displayed, press the VFO/MR button again to confirm. The radio will switch to channel mode, displaying the frequency of the counterpart. You can now communicate.

4. Transmitting and Receiving

• To Transmit: Press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button on the side of the radio or speaker microphone. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to stop transmitting.
• To Receive: Ensure the PTT button is not pressed. The radio will automatically receive signals on the selected frequency/channel.

5. VOX Function (Voice Operated Exchange)

The VOX function allows for hands-free transmission. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice.

• To enable/disable VOX, navigate through the radio's menu settings. Refer to the full menu guide for specific steps.
• Adjust the VOX sensitivity level to prevent accidental transmissions or missed voice activations.

6. FM Radio Function

Your UV-5RM can also function as an FM broadcast receiver.

• Press the FM button (refer to Figure 1) to enter FM radio mode.
• Use the keypad to manually enter an FM frequency or use the scan function to find stations.
• Press the FM button again to exit FM radio mode.

• No Power:
  • Ensure the battery is correctly installed and fully charged.
  • Check that the Power/Volume knob is rotated clockwise past the click.
• Cannot Transmit or Receive:

  • Adjust the volume level.
  • Move to an area with fewer obstructions or interference.
• Radio Not Charging:
  • Verify the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the battery and the power source.
  • Try a different USB-C cable or power source.
  • Ensure the power source provides sufficient power (e.g., a standard USB charger).
