Setup

1. Battery Installation

  1. Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio.
  2. Slide the battery pack upwards until it clicks into place.
  3. To remove, press the battery release latch (if present) and slide the battery downwards.

2. Antenna Attachment

Screw the desired antenna (original or high gain) clockwise onto the antenna connector at the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

3. Charging the Battery

The Baofeng UV-17M offers two charging methods:

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume Control

Rotate the Power/Volume knob (6 in Product Overview) clockwise to turn the radio on and increase volume. Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease volume and turn off the radio.

3. One-Key Frequency Match

This feature allows for quick pairing and grouping by copying channel configuration parameters. Refer to the detailed instructions in the included user manual for specific steps on utilizing this function.

4. VOX Mode (Voice Operated Transmit)

Activate VOX mode for hands-free operation. The radio will transmit automatically when it detects your voice. Adjust VOX sensitivity (levels 1-9) via the menu to prevent accidental transmissions or missed speech.

5. CTCSS/DCS Tones

Use CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) tones to filter out unwanted conversations and ensure privacy within a group. The radio supports 104 CDCSS and 50 CTCSS codes.

6. AM/FM Aviation Band Receiving

The UV-17M is capable of receiving signals on AM and FM aviation bands. Consult the menu settings for specific tuning and scanning options.

7. NOAA Weather Service

The radio supports NOAA weather service and can scan 10 NOAA weather channels to provide timely weather alerts.

8. CHIRP Support

The Baofeng UV-17M supports CHIRP software for advanced programming and customization of channels and settings via the USB Programming Cable. This allows for easier management of the 999 memory channels.
