Familiarize yourself with the various parts and controls of your HRD-310 radio:

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  2. Slide the cover open.
  3. Insert two (2) AA batteries (not included), ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2 Powering the Radio via USB

The radio can also be powered using the included USB cable. This is useful when batteries are low or unavailable.

  1. Connect the small end of the USB power cable to the USB power jack on the side of the radio.
  2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to a USB power source, such as a computer USB port, a USB wall adapter (not included), or a mobile power bank (not included).
  3. The radio will power on or be ready for use.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off and Volume

  • Press the POWER/SLEEP button to turn the radio on or off.
  • Rotate the VOL dial on the side of the radio to adjust the listening volume.

6.2 Band Selection

  • Press the BANDS button repeatedly to cycle through FM, AM (MW), and SW bands. The selected band will be displayed on the LCD screen.

6.3 Tuning for Stations

You can tune for stations manually or automatically.

  • Manual Tuning: Rotate the TUNING dial on the side of the radio to fine-tune the frequency. Alternatively, press the TUN+ or TUN- buttons to step through frequencies.
  • Automatic Scan: (Refer to specific model features, usually a long press of TUN+ or TUN- or a dedicated scan button). The HRD-310 supports automatic station search and storage.

6.4 Antenna Adjustment

For optimal FM and SW reception, extend the telescopic antenna fully and rotate it 360 degrees to find the best signal. For AM (MW) reception, the radio uses an internal ferrite bar antenna; try rotating the entire radio for better reception.

6.5 Preset Stations (Memory Function)

The radio can store up to 60 stations for each band (FM, AM, SW).

  • Automatic Preset: While in FM, AM, or SW mode, a long press on the MEMO button may initiate an automatic scan and store available stations.
  • Manual Preset: Tune to your desired station. Press the MEMO button briefly, then use M+ or M- to select a memory slot. Press MEMO again to confirm.
  • Recalling Presets: Press M+ or M- to cycle through your saved stations.

6.6 Alarm Function

Set an alarm to wake up to your preferred radio station.

  • To set the alarm, refer to the detailed instructions in the included Japanese manual for specific button sequences. Generally, this involves entering a time setting mode, setting the alarm time, and selecting the alarm source (radio).
  • When the alarm time is reached, the radio will automatically turn on and play the last tuned station.

6.7 Sleep Timer

The sleep timer allows the radio to play for a set duration before automatically turning off.

  • Press the POWER/SLEEP button repeatedly while the radio is on to cycle through sleep timer options (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 minutes, or OFF).
  • The selected sleep time will be displayed on the screen. The radio will turn off automatically after the set time.

6.8 Clock Setting

The radio features a digital clock. To set the time, please refer to the specific instructions in the included Japanese manual. Typically, this involves a long press of a specific button (e.g., 'TIME' or 'SET') to enter time setting mode, then using TUN+ / TUN- or other buttons to adjust hours and minutes.

6.9 Earphone Use

For private listening or stereo audio, plug the included stereo earphones into the 3.5mm earphone jack on the side of the radio. The internal speaker will be muted automatically.

7. Reception Tips

As a portable and compact radio, signal reception can be influenced by your environment. For the best reception:

  • Outdoor Use: The radio performs best in open outdoor areas where signal interference is minimal.
  • Antenna Adjustment: Always extend the telescopic antenna fully for FM and SW bands. Adjust its length and direction to find the strongest signal.
  • Radio Orientation: For AM (MW) reception, try rotating the entire radio unit to optimize the signal from its internal antenna.
  • Avoid Interference: Keep the radio away from electronic devices that may cause interference (e.g., computers, TVs, fluorescent lights).

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the radio with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: If not using the radio for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store in a cool, dry place.
