1. Introduction

The KORG WaveState M is a powerful wave sequencing synthesizer designed to generate evolving, organic sounds with intricate details. Featuring advanced Wave Sequencing 2.0 technology, 64 stereo voices, and gigabytes of samples, this instrument offers extensive sound design capabilities and real-time performance control. Its compact form factor makes it suitable for both studio and live applications.

2. Setup

2.1 Unboxing

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. The box should contain the KORG WaveState M synthesizer unit, an AC power adapter, and this instruction manual. A padded case may also be included for transport.

2.2 Power Connection

  1. Connect the supplied AC adapter to the DC 12V input jack on the rear panel of the WaveState M.
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a standard electrical outlet.

2.3 Audio Connections

  • Main Outputs: Connect the L/MONO and R 1/4-inch output jacks on the rear panel to your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier. For mono output, use only the L/MONO jack.
  • Headphone Output: Connect your headphones to the 1/4-inch headphone jack for private monitoring.

2.4 MIDI and USB Connectivity

  • MIDI In/Out: Use standard 5-pin MIDI cables to connect to external MIDI devices.
  • USB: Connect the USB port to your computer for MIDI communication and data transfer.

2.5 Damper Pedal

An optional damper pedal can be connected to the DAMPER input jack on the rear panel for sustain functionality.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Power On/Off

Press the power button located on the rear panel to turn the unit on or off. Allow a few moments for the system to boot up.

3.2 Program Selection

Use the main display and navigation controls to browse and select from the extensive library of programs. Programs are organized into categories for easy access.

3.3 Wave Sequencing 2.0

The WaveState M's core feature is Wave Sequencing 2.0, which allows for dynamic and evolving soundscapes. Manipulate the various parameters on the front panel to alter the timing, sample, pitch, shape, and gate of individual wave sequence steps. The Vector Joystick provides real-time control over the blending of up to four layers (A, B, C, D) within a performance.

3.4 Sound Editing and Effects

Utilize the numerous knobs and sliders for hands-on sound editing. Adjust filters (including modeled MS-20 and Polysix types), envelopes, LFOs, and other modulation sources. The WaveState M includes 14 simultaneous effects to add depth and character to your sounds.

3.5 Performance Features

  • Set Lists: Organize your favorite programs into Set Lists for quick recall during live performances.
  • Smooth Sound Transitions (SST): This feature ensures that sounds transition seamlessly without abrupt cuts when changing programs.
  • Arpeggiator: Activate and configure the arpeggiator to generate rhythmic patterns from held notes.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as these can damage the finish and controls.

4.2 Storage and Transport

Store the WaveState M in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. When transporting the unit, use the provided padded case or a suitable hard case to protect it from physical damage.

4.3 Software Updates

Periodically check the official KORG website for firmware updates. Keeping your WaveState M's software up-to-date ensures optimal performance and access to new features.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 No Sound Output

  • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected and the unit is powered on.
  • Verify that audio cables are correctly connected to the output jacks and your audio system.
  • Check the volume levels on the WaveState M and your connected audio system.
  • Confirm that the selected program is active and not muted.

5.2 Unexpected Behavior

  • Try power cycling the unit (turn off, wait a few seconds, then turn back on).
  • If issues persist, consult the full owner's manual available on the KORG website for detailed troubleshooting steps or consider performing a factory reset (refer to the manual for instructions).

5.3 Connectivity Issues (MIDI/USB)

  • Ensure all MIDI and USB cables are securely connected.
