4. Setup and Installation

Careful planning and execution are essential for a successful installation. Follow these steps for proper setup:

4.1 Pre-Installation Checklist:

  • Read the entire manual before beginning.
  • Ensure you have all necessary tools and wiring materials (power wire, ground wire, remote wire, RCA cables, speaker wire, external fuse holder, fuse).
  • Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal.

4.2 Mounting Location:

Choose a mounting location that:

  • Provides adequate ventilation for cooling.
  • Is protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Is secure and away from moving parts or potential damage.
  • Allows for short power and ground wire runs.

The compact size of the ION1200.1D makes it suitable for various locations, including under seats, in trunks, or fairings on motorcycles.

4.3 Wiring Connections:

Power (B+ / +12V):

  • Run a power cable (minimum 4-gauge recommended) directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery to the amplifier's +12V terminal.
  • Install an external fuse holder with a 100A fuse within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.

Ground (GND):

  • Run a ground cable (minimum 4-gauge recommended) from the amplifier's GND terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis.
  • Ensure the ground point is free of paint, rust, or dirt for a solid electrical connection. The ground wire should be as short as possible, ideally less than 3 feet (1 meter).

Remote Turn-On (REM):

  • Connect a remote turn-on wire (18-gauge recommended) from your head unit's remote output to the amplifier's REM terminal. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.

Audio Input (RCA or High-Level):

  • RCA Input: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp output to the amplifier's INPUT (RCA) jacks.
  • High-Level Input: If your head unit does not have RCA outputs, use the included high-level input harness. Connect the speaker wires from your head unit to the corresponding wires on the harness, then plug the harness into the amplifier's HI INPUT port.

Speaker Output:

  • Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SPEAKER OUT terminals. Ensure the total impedance of your speakers matches the amplifier's recommended load (1-Ohm minimum).
  • Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all speaker connections.

Remote Level Control:

  • Plug the remote level control cable into the REMOTE port on the amplifier. Mount the control knob in a convenient location for easy adjustment.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the amplifier is installed and wired, follow these steps to configure and operate it:

5.1 Initial Power-Up:

  • After all connections are made and verified, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal.
  • Turn on your head unit. The amplifier's POW/PROT LED should illuminate green, indicating it is powered on.

5.2 Adjusting Controls:

GAIN Control:

  • Start with the GAIN control set to minimum (fully counter-clockwise).
  • Play a familiar music track with a strong signal.
  • Slowly increase the head unit volume until it reaches about 75-80% of its maximum level.
  • Gradually increase the amplifier's GAIN control until you hear distortion or the CLIP LED illuminates. Then, back off slightly until the sound is clear and the CLIP LED is off.

Crossover Filters (HIGH / LOW Pass):

  • The ION1200.1D features variable full-range crossover filters. For subwoofer applications, set the filter to LOW Pass and adjust the frequency knob (15Hz - 1KHz) to cut off higher frequencies, allowing only bass to pass through. A common starting point for subwoofers is around 80-100Hz.
  • If using the amplifier for full-range speakers, you can set the filter to HIGH Pass and adjust the frequency knob (20Hz - 20KHz) to cut off lower frequencies, protecting smaller speakers from damaging bass.

BASS BOOST:

  • The BASS BOOST control (0dB to +12dB) allows you to enhance low-frequency output. Use this sparingly and adjust carefully to avoid distortion or speaker damage. Start at 0dB and increase gradually if desired.

Remote Level Control:

  • The remote level control allows you to adjust the subwoofer output level from your listening position without accessing the amplifier directly. This control typically acts as an attenuator, reducing the output from the maximum level set by the GAIN control.

6. Maintenance

The DS18 ION1200.1D amplifier requires minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure its longevity:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Connection Checks: Annually, inspect all power, ground, remote, and speaker connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Loose connections can cause performance issues or damage.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's cooling fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper heat dissipation.
