4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection

  1. Carefully remove the MAX-730D-SM8 unit and all accessories from the packaging.
  2. Inspect the device for any signs of physical damage. If damage is found, contact your supplier immediately.
  3. Verify that all components listed in the packing slip are present.

4.2 Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the device's internal battery.

  1. Connect the provided AC power adapter to the power input port on the device (refer to Figure 3.2).
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a suitable power outlet.
  3. The charging indicator will illuminate. Allow several hours for a full charge. The device can be used while charging.

4.3 Powering On/Off

  • To Power On: Press and hold the power button (located below the screen, refer to Figure 3.1) until the EXFO logo appears on the display.
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until a shutdown prompt appears on the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to power off the device safely.

4.4 Connecting Fiber Optic Cables

The MAX-730D-SM8 uses an SC/APC adapter for fiber connections.

  1. Ensure the fiber optic connector is clean. Use a fiber optic cleaning tool if necessary.
  2. Carefully insert the SC/APC fiber connector into the OTDR port on the device (refer to Figure 3.2). Ensure a secure connection.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Navigation

The MAX-730D-SM8 features a 7-inch touchscreen for navigation. Tap icons and menus to select functions. Swipe gestures may be used for scrolling through lists or graphs.

5.2 Performing an OTDR Test

  1. From the main menu, select the 'OTDR' application.
  2. Select Wavelengths: Choose the desired test wavelengths (e.g., 1310/1550nm for standard testing, or 1650nm for Live Test).
  3. Set Test Parameters: Adjust parameters such as pulse width, range, and acquisition time as required for your specific fiber link. For FTTx/PON networks, ensure appropriate settings for testing through splitters.
  4. Start Test: Tap the 'Start' or 'Measure' button to begin the OTDR acquisition.
  5. Interpret Results: The OTDR trace will be displayed on the screen, showing events like splices, connectors, and fiber breaks. Use the on-screen tools to analyze event loss, reflectance, and attenuation.

5.3 Using the iOLM Function

The iOLM (Intelligent Optical Link Mapper) simplifies OTDR testing by automating parameter selection and providing a clear, icon-based view of the fiber link.

  1. From the main menu, select the 'iOLM' application.
  2. One-Touch Acquisition: The iOLM will automatically perform multiple acquisitions at different pulse widths and wavelengths.
  3. Go/No-Go Results: The results are presented in a straightforward visual format, indicating pass/fail status for each event and the overall link.
  4. Detailed Analysis: Tap on specific events to view detailed information such as loss, reflectance, and distance.

5.4 Saving and Reporting Data

The MAX-730D-SM8 allows for easy saving and generation of test reports.

  • After a test, tap the 'Save' icon to store the results internally.
  • To generate a report, navigate to the 'Files' or 'Reports' section. Select the desired test results and choose the 'Generate PDF Report' option.
  • Reports can be transferred to a computer via USB or other available connectivity options.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Device

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with a mild cleaning solution (e.g., isopropyl alcohol) to clean the touchscreen and exterior casing.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the display or plastic components.

6.2 Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors
