5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Navigating the Interface
The MAX-730D-SM8 features a 7-inch touchscreen interface. Navigate through menus and options by tapping on icons and selections. Use the home button to return to the main menu.
5.2 Performing an OTDR Test
- Ensure the fiber under test is clean and properly connected to the OTDR port using the SC/APC adapter.
- From the main menu, select the "OTDR" application.
- Configure test parameters such as wavelength (1310nm, 1550nm, 1650nm), pulse width, and range as required for your specific application.
- Initiate the test. The device will display the trace and event table.
- Analyze the trace for events like splices, connectors, and breaks.
5.3 Using the iOLM Function
The Intelligent Optical Link Mapper (iOLM) simplifies OTDR testing by automating parameter settings and providing a clear, icon-based view of the fiber link. To use iOLM:
- Select the "iOLM" application from the main menu.
- Connect the fiber to the OTDR port.
- Press the "Start" button. The iOLM will perform multiple acquisitions and analyze the link, presenting results in an easy-to-understand visual format with go/no-go indicators.
- Review the link map and event table for detailed information.
5.4 Data Management and Reporting
Test results can be saved internally on the device. The MAX-730D-SM8 supports industry-leading onboard PDF reporting. Connect the device to a computer via USB to transfer saved data and reports.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning the Optical Connectors
Clean optical connectors regularly to ensure accurate measurements. Use only approved fiber optic cleaning tools and methods. Dirty connectors are the leading cause of inaccurate test results and can damage the OTDR port.
6.2 Swap-Out Connector Replacement
The MAX-730D-SM8 features a user-replaceable Swap-Out connector. If the connector becomes damaged or worn, it can be easily replaced without requiring a service center visit. Refer to the detailed instructions in the full EXFO user guide for the replacement procedure.
6.3 General Cleaning
Wipe the device's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no liquid enters the ports or openings.
7. Troubleshooting
