Assembly
Your PowerSmart snow blower requires some assembly before first use. Follow these steps carefully.
Unpacking and Contents:
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts listed below are present. If any parts are missing or damaged, contact customer service.

Figure 1: Included Parts and Accessories. This image displays various components and accessories that come with the PowerSmart snow blower, including handle bolts, shear pins, a chute cleaner tool, key switch, shave plate, metal skid shoes, plastic skid shoes, tires, spark plug, engine oil, upper and lower auger cables, V-belt, synchronous belt, and upper and lower drive cables. Each item is labeled with its part number.
Handle Assembly:
- Attach the upper handle to the lower handle using the provided handle bolts and nuts. Ensure all connections are secure.
- Connect the control cables (auger and drive) to their respective levers on the handle. Refer to the diagram for correct routing.
Chute Assembly:
- Mount the discharge chute onto the snow blower housing. Secure it with the provided hardware.
- Attach the chute rotation handle to the chute mechanism. Test its movement to ensure smooth rotation.
Skid Shoes and Shave Plate:
Install the skid shoes and shave plate. Adjust the skid shoes to the desired height based on the surface you will be clearing. For paved surfaces, set them lower; for gravel, set them higher to prevent picking up debris.
Important Note: As suggested by user experience, do not center the skid shoes during installation. Allow the machine to rest on the ground and then screw them in place to minimize the gap under the red metal part, ensuring a cleaner scrape.
Operating Instructions
Before each use, perform a pre-operation check. Ensure all fasteners are tight, controls operate freely, and there are no visible signs of damage.
Fuel and Oil:
- Engine Oil: Fill the engine with 4-cycle engine oil (SAE 5W-30 is recommended for cold weather). The engine requires approximately 20 oz (0.6 liters). Check the oil level using the dipstick; do not overfill.
- Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline (minimum 87 octane). The fuel tank capacity is approximately 0.5 gallons. Do not use E85 fuel.

Figure 2: Engine and Fuel Cap. This image highlights the 252cc OHV engine of the snow blower, indicating the location for fuel and oil input. The engine is a critical component for the snow blower's operation.
Starting the Engine:
- Insert the ignition key into the key switch.
- Set the fuel valve to the "ON" position.
- Move the choke lever to the "FULL CHOKE" position (for cold starts).
- Set the throttle lever to the "FAST" position.
- Electric Start: Connect an extension cord to the electric start port and press the start button. Hold for 3-5 seconds.

Figure 3: Electric Start Mechanism. This image shows the electric start button and the port where an extension cord is connected, illustrating the easy starting procedure for the snow blower.
- Recoil Start: Grasp the recoil starter handle and pull slowly until resistance is felt, then pull quickly and firmly. Repeat until the engine starts.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the "RUN" position as the engine warms up.
Operating the Snow Blower:
- Self-Propelled Drive: Engage the drive lever to move the snow blower forward or backward. Adjust the speed using the speed selector lever. Gears 1-4 are suitable for clearing snow, while gears 5-6 are for moving the machine without clearing.

Figure 4: Self-Propelled Control. This image shows a gloved hand adjusting the self-propelled speed control lever, demonstrating the ease of maneuvering the snow blower.
- Auger Engagement: Squeeze the auger control lever to engage the auger and impeller, which will begin clearing snow. Release the lever to stop the auger.
- Chute Control: Use the chute rotation handle to direct the snow discharge. The chute deflector control lever adjusts the throwing distance.

Figure 5: Two-Stage Auger System. This image provides a detailed view of the snow blower's two-stage auger and impeller system, responsible for collecting and discharging snow up to 45 feet.
- Clearing Snow: Work in overlapping paths. For deep snow, it may be necessary to make two passes, taking a partial width cut on the first pass.
- Headlight: The snow blower is equipped with an LED headlight for operation in low-light conditions.

Figure 6: Integrated LED Headlight. This image focuses on the LED headlight located on the control panel, providing illumination for early morning or late evening snow removal.
Stopping the Engine:
- Release the auger control lever.
- Release the drive control lever.
- Move the throttle lever to the "STOP" or "OFF" position.
- Remove the ignition key.
- Important Note: When finished, place the clutch in "neutral" (between 1st Reverse and 1st Forward) to prevent accidental engagement. Consider attaching the key to the bar with a small wire to prevent loss in snow.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your snow blower. Always turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
After Each Use:
- Clear any snow or ice from the machine, especially around the auger and chute.
- Inspect for loose fasteners or damaged parts.
Engine Oil Change:
Change the engine oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25 hours or annually, whichever comes first. Refer to the engine manual for specific instructions.
Spark Plug:
Inspect and clean the spark plug annually. Replace if electrodes are worn or pitted. Use only the recommended spark plug type.
Shear Pins:
Shear pins are designed to break if the auger encounters an obstruction, protecting the gearbox. Always keep spare shear pins on hand and replace them only with genuine PowerSmart parts.
Storage:
- Before storing for extended periods, drain the fuel tank or add a fuel stabilizer.
- Clean the entire machine thoroughly.
- Store in a dry, protected area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
