PETZL NEOX

PETZL NEOX Belay Device Instruction Manual

Model: NEOX | Brand: PETZL

1. Introduction

The PETZL NEOX is an advanced cam-assisted blocking belay device designed for rock climbing and sports wall climbing. It is engineered to provide fluid rope handling for lead climbing and controlled descents. The integrated pulley facilitates efficient rope feeding, while the cam-assisted blocking mechanism enhances safety during falls. This device is compatible with single ropes ranging from 8.5 mm to 11 mm in diameter.

Important: This instruction manual provides essential information for the correct use of the NEOX belay device. It is crucial to read and understand all instructions before use. Climbing is inherently dangerous. You are responsible for your own actions and decisions. Before using this equipment, you must:

  • Read and understand all instructions for use.
  • Get specific training in its proper use.
  • Become familiar with its capabilities and limitations.
  • Understand and accept the risks involved.
Failure to heed any of these warnings may result in severe injury or death. If you do not understand these instructions, do not use this equipment.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when using climbing equipment. Ensure all components are in good working order before each use. Regularly inspect your rope and belay device for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Use only compatible ropes and carabiners as specified by PETZL. Never modify the device. Always maintain a proper brake hand position on the rope. Seek professional instruction if you are unsure about any aspect of belaying or climbing safety.

The NEOX is an assisted-blocking device, but it is not an automatic locking device. The belayer must always maintain control of the brake side of the rope. The cam-assisted blocking function activates when the rope is weighted, but proper belay technique is paramount.

3. Components Overview

The PETZL NEOX belay device consists of several key parts designed for optimal performance and safety:

  • Body: The main frame of the device, typically made from aluminum.
  • Cam: An internal mechanism that pivots and blocks the rope when weighted.
  • Pulley Wheel: A stainless steel wheel that rotates freely to allow smooth rope feeding.
  • Handle: An ergonomic lever used to control the descent of the climber.
  • Rope Slots: Clearly marked channels for proper rope insertion.
  • Attachment Point: Hole for connecting to the belay carabiner on the harness.

4. Setup and Rope Installation

Correct setup is critical for safe operation. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Inspect Device and Rope: Before each use, thoroughly inspect the NEOX for any cracks, deformation, excessive wear, or corrosion. Check the rope for cuts, abrasions, or flat spots.
  2. Attach to Harness: Connect the NEOX to your belay loop using a locking carabiner. Ensure the carabiner is fully locked.
  3. Rope Installation:
    • Identify the climber's side of the rope and the brake side of the rope.
    • Follow the engraved rope path diagram on the device. The climber's side of the rope should pass through the device as indicated by the climber icon, and the brake side should exit as indicated by the hand icon.
    • Ensure the rope is correctly threaded through the device, engaging the cam and pulley wheel.
  4. Initial Checks: Perform a system check with your climbing partner. Verify that the rope is correctly installed, the carabiner is locked, and both belayer and climber are ready.

5. Operating Instructions

The NEOX is designed for efficient belaying in various climbing scenarios.

5.1. Giving Slack (Lead Belaying)

The integrated stainless steel pulley wheel allows for exceptionally fluid rope payout. To give slack, push the rope through the device with your guide hand while simultaneously pulling the brake rope through with your brake hand. The wheel rotates freely, minimizing friction and preventing short-roping. Always keep your brake hand on the rope.

5.2. Taking Slack

To take slack, pull the brake side of the rope downwards while simultaneously pulling the climber's side of the rope upwards. The NEOX's design allows for smooth and quick rope retrieval.

5.3. Catching a Fall

When a fall occurs, the sudden weighting of the rope causes the internal cam to pivot and block the rope against the device body. Maintain a firm grip on the brake side of the rope. The cam-assisted blocking mechanism significantly reduces the force required by the belayer to hold a fall, regardless of the brake strand angle.

5.4. Lowering the Climber

To lower the climber, gently pull the ergonomic handle. This disengages the cam and allows the rope to feed through the device. The NEOX provides a 3:1 mechanical advantage, enabling a smooth and progressive descent. Control the lowering speed by adjusting the pressure on the handle and maintaining a firm grip on the brake rope. Release the handle to re-engage the cam and stop the descent.

6. Maintenance and Storage

Proper maintenance extends the life of your NEOX and ensures its continued safe operation.

6.1. Inspection

Regularly inspect the device for:

  • Cracks, dents, or deformation on the metal body.
  • Excessive wear or sharp edges in the rope channels.
  • Proper function of the cam and pulley wheel (should move freely).
  • Corrosion or rust on metal parts.
  • Damage to the handle mechanism.

If any significant damage or wear is observed, retire the device immediately.

6.2. Cleaning

Clean the NEOX with fresh water and a mild soap if it becomes dirty. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely before storage. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents.

6.3. Storage

Store the device in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, chemicals, and other corrosive substances. Ensure it is clean and dry before storage.

7. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

  • Rope not feeding smoothly:
    • Check for proper rope installation according to the device markings.
    • Ensure the rope is not twisted or kinked.
    • Verify the rope diameter is within the specified range (8.5 mm to 11 mm).
    • Inspect the device for any obstructions or damage to the pulley wheel.
  • Device not blocking effectively:
    • Confirm the rope is installed in the correct direction.
    • Ensure your brake hand is always on the brake side of the rope.
    • Inspect the cam for wear or damage that might prevent proper engagement.
    • Check the rope for excessive wear or glazing that could reduce friction.
  • Difficulty lowering the climber:
    • Ensure the handle is fully engaged to release the cam.
    • Adjust the pressure on the handle gradually.
    • Thicker ropes (closer to 11 mm) may require more force to lower smoothly.
