1. Important Safety Instructions

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating this appliance. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Electrical Safety: Always unplug the appliance from the power outlet before performing any maintenance, cleaning, or when not in use. Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug. Do not immerse the plug or cord in water.
  • UV Lamp Safety: The UV lamp emits ultraviolet radiation. Never look directly at the UV lamp when it is illuminated, as it can cause severe eye and skin damage. Ensure the unit is fully assembled and submerged before powering on.
  • Water Immersion: This appliance is designed for submersible use in aquariums or garden ponds. Ensure the unit is fully submerged in water before connecting to power, unless using the aeration feature which requires the air intake to be above water.
  • Children and Pets: Keep this appliance out of reach of children and pets.
  • Indoor Use Only: This product is intended for indoor use only.
  • Proper Installation: Ensure the unit is securely attached to the aquarium wall using the provided suction cups to prevent movement.

3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly set up your SunSun JUP-23 filter:

  1. Unpack the Unit: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage.
  2. Attach Suction Cups: Securely attach the provided suction cups to the designated points on the side of the filter unit.
  3. Placement in Aquarium: Position the filter unit inside your aquarium. It can be installed vertically or horizontally. Ensure it is placed in an area with good water circulation.
  4. Secure the Unit: Press the suction cups firmly against the clean inner glass surface of the aquarium to secure the unit in place.
  5. Aeration Setup (Optional): If you wish to use the aeration feature, connect the included airline tubing to the air intake nozzle (typically a blue cap on top of the unit). Ensure the open end of the airline tubing remains above the water surface to draw in air. If aeration is not desired, the unit can be fully submerged without the airline tubing connected.
  6. Submerge Completely: Ensure the entire unit, including the UV lamp section, is fully submerged in water before plugging it in.
  7. Connect to Power: Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. The unit will begin operating.

4. Operating Instructions

Once installed, operating the SunSun JUP-23 is straightforward:

  • Power On/Off: The unit operates continuously when plugged in. To turn it off, simply unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  • Adjusting Water Flow: The JUP-23 features an adjustable flow rate. Locate the flow control knob (often a rotating dial) on the unit. Rotate the knob to increase or decrease the water flow. Turning it clockwise typically increases the flow.
  • UV Sterilizer Operation: The UV lamp activates automatically when the unit is powered on. A steady light indicator (if present) confirms its operation. The UV lamp should emit a continuous light when functioning correctly. If the UV light blinks rapidly or flickers, refer to the troubleshooting section.
  • Aeration Function: If the airline tubing is connected and its end is above the water surface, the unit will draw in air and release bubbles into the aquarium, providing additional oxygenation.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your SunSun JUP-23. Always unplug the unit before performing any maintenance.

  1. Cleaning Filter Media:
    • Carefully remove the unit from the aquarium.
    • Disassemble the filtration cover section (refer to Figure 2.2 for component identification).
    • Remove any filter sponges or media. Rinse them thoroughly with old aquarium water (not tap water, to preserve beneficial bacteria) to remove accumulated debris. Replace heavily soiled or degraded media.
    • Reassemble the filter section securely.
  2. Cleaning UV Quartz Sleeve:
    • After removing the filter media, carefully access the UV lamp and its protective quartz sleeve.
    • Gently slide out the quartz sleeve. Clean any algae or mineral deposits from its surface using a soft cloth and a mild acid solution (like vinegar) if necessary, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
    • Ensure the quartz sleeve is completely dry before reinstallation.
  3. UV Lamp Replacement:
    • UV lamps typically have an effective lifespan of 6-12 months. After this period, their sterilizing effectiveness diminishes, even if they still light up.
    • To replace, carefully remove the old UV lamp from its holder after removing the quartz sleeve.
    • Install a new, compatible UV lamp, ensuring it is seated correctly in the lamp holder. Avoid touching the glass part of the new lamp with bare hands; use a cloth or gloves.
    • Reinstall the quartz sleeve and reassemble the unit.

  4. Impeller Cleaning:
    • Access the impeller chamber (usually located near the motor, refer to Figure 2.2).
    • Remove the impeller and clean any debris, hair, or mineral buildup from the impeller and its chamber using a small brush.
    • Reinstall the impeller, ensuring it spins freely.
  5. Reassembly: After cleaning all components, carefully reassemble the unit, ensuring all parts are securely fitted. Place it back in the aquarium and plug it in.

6. Troubleshooting

If your SunSun JUP-23 is not functioning as expected, consult the following troubleshooting guide:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Unit does not turn onNo power to the unit; Damaged power cord/plug; Faulty outlet.Check power connection. Test outlet with another appliance. Inspect power cord for damage.
