1. Important Safety Instructions
Always observe basic safety precautions when using power tools to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.
- Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
- Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
- Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection. Use hearing protection when operating the tool for extended periods. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair and clothing away from moving parts.
- Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
- Service: Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

3. Setup
3.1 Attaching the Auxiliary Handle
For optimal control and safety, always use the auxiliary handle. Loosen the handle clamp, position the handle to your desired angle, and securely tighten the clamp.
3.2 Installing SDS-Max Bits
- Clean the shank of the SDS-Max bit and apply a thin layer of grease (if provided) to ensure smooth insertion and removal.
- Pull back the chuck sleeve on the machine.
- Insert the bit into the chuck until it clicks into place.
- Release the chuck sleeve. Pull on the bit to ensure it is securely locked. The bit should have a slight axial play, which is normal for SDS-Max systems.
3.3 Removing SDS-Max Bits
- Unplug the machine from the power source.
- Pull back the chuck sleeve firmly.
- Pull the bit out of the chuck.
4. Operating Instructions
The CT18080 BMC offers two primary operating modes: hammer drilling and chisel drilling.
4.1 Selecting Operating Mode
The mode selector switch is located on the side of the tool. Rotate the switch to select the desired mode:
- Hammer Drilling: For drilling holes in concrete, masonry, and stone with impact action.
- Chisel Drilling (Chiseling): For chiseling, chipping, and demolition work in concrete and masonry without rotation.
Note: Always ensure the tool is unplugged before changing the operating mode to prevent accidental activation.
4.2 Starting and Stopping the Tool
- To Start: Plug the tool into a suitable power outlet (230-240V, 50/60Hz). Press the ON/OFF trigger switch. The power indicator light will illuminate.
- To Stop: Release the ON/OFF trigger switch.
4.3 General Operation Tips
- Apply steady, firm pressure, but do not force the tool. Let the tool do the work.
- For hammer drilling, hold the tool firmly with both hands using the main and auxiliary handles.
- When chiseling, position the chisel at the desired angle and apply consistent pressure.
- Avoid prolonged continuous operation to prevent overheating. Allow the tool to cool down periodically.
- Always be aware of hidden electrical wires, gas pipes, and water pipes when drilling or chiseling into walls. Use a detector if necessary.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Crown CT18080 BMC machine.
5.1 Cleaning
- After each use, clean the tool's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Clear any dust or debris from the ventilation openings to ensure proper motor cooling.
- Clean the chuck regularly to prevent dust and debris from interfering with bit changes.
5.2 Lubrication
The SDS-Max chuck mechanism benefits from periodic lubrication. Apply a small amount of specialized grease to the bit shank before insertion to reduce wear and improve performance.
5.3 Carbon Brushes
The carbon brushes are wear parts. If the motor performance decreases significantly or sparks become excessive, the carbon brushes may need replacement. This should be performed by a qualified service technician.
5.4 Storage
Store the machine in its original BMC (Blow Molded Case) in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children. Ensure the power cord is neatly coiled and not kinked.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tool does not start. | No power supply; faulty power cord/plug; trigger switch fault. | Check power outlet and connections. Inspect power cord for damage. If issues persist, seek professional service. |
| Reduced impact power. | Worn carbon brushes; insufficient lubrication; internal mechanical issue. | Check for excessive sparking (worn brushes). Ensure bit shank is lubricated. If problem continues, contact service center. |
| Bit not locking in chuck. | Chuck sleeve not fully pulled back; debris in chuck; damaged chuck. | Ensure chuck sleeve is fully retracted. Clean chuck thoroughly. If damaged, seek professional repair. |
| Overheating during operation. | Blocked ventilation slots; continuous heavy load; worn motor components. | Clear ventilation slots. Allow tool to cool down. Reduce load or operating time. If persistent, professional inspection is needed. |
