3. Setup Guide
3.1 Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Installation
The NVR does not include a pre-installed Hard Disk Drive. An HDD is required for recording and playback. The NVR supports up to 10TB HDD. Follow these steps to install an HDD:
- Unscrew and remove the top cover of the NVR.
- Connect the SATA data cable and power cable from the NVR to the corresponding ports on your HDD.
- Secure the HDD to the NVR chassis using the provided screws.
- Replace the top cover and secure it with screws.
3.2 Physical Connections
Connect the NVR to your network, display, and cameras as follows:
- Connect Cameras: Plug your PoE cameras into the "PoE Ports" on the back of the NVR using Ethernet cables. For additional cameras beyond the 8 built-in PoE ports, connect them to an external PoE switch (not included) which is then connected to the NVR's LAN port.
- Connect to Display: Connect a monitor to the NVR using either the HDMI or VGA port.
- Connect Mouse: Plug the USB mouse into one of the USB ports on the NVR.
- Connect to Network (Optional for Local Use): For remote viewing and app notifications, connect the NVR's LAN port to your router using an Ethernet cable. The NVR can function for local recording and viewing without an internet connection.
- Power On: Connect the power adapter to the NVR's power input and then plug it into a power outlet.

Figure 3.3: Works With/Without Internet. This image clarifies that the PoE NVR can be used for local recording and live viewing without an internet connection, but an internet connection is required for remote viewing and push notifications.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Initial Setup and Configuration
Upon first boot-up, the NVR will guide you through an initial setup wizard. This typically includes setting up a password, date/time, network settings, and formatting the installed HDD.
4.2 Recording Modes
The NVR supports various recording modes:
- Continuous Recording: Records 24/7.
- Motion Detection Recording: Records only when motion is detected.
- Scheduled Recording: Records during specific time periods.
You can configure these settings for each camera through the NVR's interface.
4.3 Playback
To view recorded footage:
- Access the NVR's main menu using the connected mouse.
- Navigate to the "Playback" or "Search" section.
- Select the desired camera(s), date, and time range.
- The NVR supports synchronous playback of multiple channels.
4.4 Motion Detection and AI Features
The NVR features advanced AI-based detection for people and vehicles. To configure:
- From the main menu, go to "Alarm" or "Event" settings.
- Select "Motion Detection" or "Smart Detection."
- Enable human and vehicle detection for specific channels.
- Customize motion detection zones to define specific areas for monitoring and to exclude irrelevant areas.
- Configure alert actions such as app push notifications, email alerts with screenshots, or NVR buzzer warnings.

Figure 4.1: Customizable Motion Detection Zones. This image illustrates how users can define specific areas (zones) within the camera's view for motion detection, allowing for more targeted monitoring.
4.5 Privacy Area Masking
To protect privacy, you can mask specific areas within the camera's view so they are not recorded or displayed:
- Access the camera settings for the desired channel.
- Look for "Privacy Mask" or "Privacy Area" options.
- Draw or select the areas you wish to mask.

Figure 4.2: Privacy Area Masking. This image shows how specific regions within the camera's field of view can be obscured to protect privacy.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Hard Disk Drive Management
The NVR will automatically overwrite the oldest recordings when the HDD is full. You can configure this behavior in the storage settings. Regularly check the HDD status in the system information to ensure proper functioning.
5.2 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the SOVMIKU official website for firmware updates. Upgrading firmware can fix bugs, optimize performance, and add new features. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package carefully to avoid damaging the device.
5.3 General Care
- Keep the NVR in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating.
- Avoid exposing the NVR to direct sunlight, moisture, or extreme temperatures.
- Clean the exterior of the NVR with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your SOVMIKU NVR.
6.1 NVR Not Finding Cameras / Cameras Offline
- Check Physical Connections: Ensure all Ethernet cables are securely connected to both the NVR's PoE ports and the cameras.
- Power to Cameras: Verify that the NVR is powered on and providing power to the PoE cameras.
- IP Address Issues: If cameras are connected via an external switch, ensure they have valid IP addresses within the NVR's network segment. Try manually adding the camera's IP address through the NVR interface.
- Compatibility: Ensure your cameras are compatible PoE or ONVIF IP cameras.
- Factory Reset (Caution): If password issues or configuration errors persist, a factory reset might be necessary. Consult the NVR's on-screen menu for this option. Be aware this will erase all settings.
6.2 NVR Reboots Frequently
- Overheating: Ensure the NVR is in a well-ventilated area and not obstructed. Unplug the NVR and allow it to cool down.
- Power Supply: Verify the power adapter is the original one provided and is functioning correctly. An unstable power supply can cause reboots.
- HDD Issues: A faulty or improperly installed HDD can cause system instability. Try disconnecting the HDD temporarily to see if the reboots stop.
- Firmware: Ensure the NVR has the latest stable firmware version.
6.3 "No Network Present" Error
- Ethernet Cable: Check the Ethernet cable connecting the NVR to your router. Try a different cable.
- Router/Network: Ensure your router is functioning and providing network access. Test network connectivity with another device.
- NVR Network Settings: Verify the NVR's IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings are correct (DHCP is usually recommended for simplicity).
6.4 Excessive False Motion Alerts
- Adjust Sensitivity: Lower the motion detection sensitivity in the NVR settings.
- Refine Detection Zones: Adjust the motion detection zones to exclude areas with frequent irrelevant movement (e.g., trees swaying, busy roads, pets).
- Enable Human/Vehicle Detection: Ensure the AI-based human and vehicle detection is enabled for relevant channels to filter out non-human/vehicle movements.
