4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is critical for the performance and safety of your filter system.

  1. Location: Place the filter system on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete, as close to the pool as possible. Ensure adequate ventilation and protection from direct sunlight and extreme weather.
  2. Assembly:
    • Attach the pump to the base plate.
    • Place the filter tank onto the base plate.
    • Connect the pump to the filter tank inlet.
    • Install the multi-port valve onto the top of the filter tank, ensuring a secure, watertight seal.
    • Attach the pressure gauge to the multi-port valve.
  3. Filter Media (Sand) Installation:
    • Remove the multi-port valve from the tank.
    • Cover the standpipe opening inside the tank to prevent sand from entering.
    • Carefully pour the recommended amount and grade of filter sand (e.g., #20 silica sand) into the tank. Refer to the specifications for the correct quantity.
    • Level the sand and remove the standpipe cover.
    • Reinstall the multi-port valve, ensuring it is properly seated and sealed.
  4. Plumbing Connections:
    • Connect the pool skimmer/main drain line to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve.
    • Connect the pool return line to the "RETURN" port on the multi-port valve.
    • Connect a waste line to the "WASTE" port on the multi-port valve, directing it to an appropriate drainage area.
    • Ensure all connections are tight and leak-free.
  5. Electrical Connection:
    • Connect the pump to a properly grounded electrical outlet or circuit, protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI).
    • Ensure the voltage and frequency match the pump's requirements.

5. Operating Instructions

The multi-port valve controls the flow of water through the filter system. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage.

Multi-Port Valve Positions:

  • FILTER: Normal filtering operation. Water flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool. This is the most common setting.
  • BACKWASH: Used to clean the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the sand bed, dislodging trapped debris, and is directed out the waste port. Backwash until the sight glass (if present) runs clear.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water to waste. Run for 30-60 seconds.
  • WASTE/DRAIN: Bypasses the filter and sends water directly out the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
  • RECIRCULATE/BYPASS: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • CLOSED/WINTERIZE: Closes all ports to the filter. Use for servicing the pump or filter, or for winterizing the system. Never operate the pump in this position.

Starting the System:

  1. Ensure the pool is filled to the proper level.
  2. Prime the pump if necessary (fill the pump basket with water).
  3. Set the multi-port valve to "BACKWASH".
  4. Turn on the pump and backwash for 2-3 minutes or until the water in the sight glass is clear.
  5. Turn off the pump.
  6. Set the multi-port valve to "RINSE".
  7. Turn on the pump and rinse for 30-60 seconds.
  8. Turn off the pump.
  9. Set the multi-port valve to "FILTER".
  10. Turn on the pump. Note the initial pressure gauge reading. This is your clean filter pressure.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures efficient operation and extends the life of your filter system.

  • Backwashing: Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI (0.5-0.7 bar) above your clean filter pressure, or when pool water appears cloudy.
  • Pump Basket Cleaning: Regularly inspect and clean the pump strainer basket. Turn off the pump, close necessary valves, remove the lid, empty debris, and replace.
  • Filter Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically lasts 3-5 years, depending on usage and water chemistry. Replace the sand when filtration efficiency decreases despite regular backwashing.
  • Winterization: In cold climates, drain all water from the pump, filter, and plumbing lines to prevent freezing damage. Store the multi-port valve handle in the "WINTERIZE" or "CLOSED" position (if available) or remove it and store indoors.
  • Leak Inspection: Periodically check all connections for leaks and tighten as necessary.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low water flow / Low pressureClogged skimmer/pump basket, dirty filter sand, air leak in suction line, pump not primed.Clean baskets, backwash/rinse filter, check for air leaks, prime pump.
Cloudy pool waterDirty filter sand, insufficient filtration time, improper water chemistry, broken laterals inside filter.Backwash/rinse, run filter longer, balance chemicals, inspect laterals (requires draining sand).
Water leaking from valveWorn O-rings/gaskets, loose connections.Inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets, tighten connections.
Pump not runningNo power, tripped breaker/GFCI, motor issue.Check power supply, reset breaker/GFCI, consult a qualified electrician.
