1. Introduction

The StarMax MX-100R is an HDMI to ATSC/J.83B QAM Modulator designed to convert an HDMI video source into a digital RF signal for distribution over a coaxial cable network. This device allows you to broadcast 1080p/i HD video content from sources such as set-top boxes, DVD players, surveillance cameras, computers, or video streaming devices to multiple televisions via a standard coaxial infrastructure.

4.1 Front Panel

5. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your StarMax MX-100R modulator.

5.1 Connection Diagram

5.2 Physical Connections

  1. Connect HDMI Source: Use the provided HDMI cable to connect your video source (e.g., DVD player, set-top box) to the HDMI IN port on the rear of the MX-100R.
  2. Connect Optional RF Input: If you wish to combine the modulated HDMI signal with existing antenna or cable TV signals, connect your antenna or cable TV drop to the RF IN port on the side of the MX-100R using a coaxial cable. If not combining signals, leave this port disconnected.
  3. Connect RF Output: Connect the RF OUT port on the side of the MX-100R to your coaxial distribution network or directly to the antenna/cable input of your television(s) using a coaxial cable. A splitter may be required for multiple TVs.
  4. Connect Power: Plug the included DC 12V power adapter into the DC 12V port on the rear of the MX-100R, then plug the adapter into a power outlet. The unit will power on automatically.

6. Operating Instructions

Once connected, configure the modulator and scan for the new channel on your televisions.

6.1 Initial Configuration

  1. Power On: Ensure the MX-100R is powered on. The PWR LED should be illuminated.
  2. Navigate Menu: Use the Up/Down/Left/Right navigation buttons on the front panel to browse the menu options displayed on the LCD screen.
  3. Select Channel Number: From the main menu, navigate to the "Channel Plan" or "Channel Settings" option. Select a desired channel number for your modulated HDMI video. Ensure this channel is not already in use by other broadcasts in your area to avoid interference.
  4. Enter Channel Name (Optional): You may enter a custom name for the channel (e.g., "HDMI Source 1") for easier identification on your TVs.
  5. Confirm Settings: Press the ENTER button to save your configurations.

6.2 TV Channel Scan

After configuring the modulator, your televisions need to scan for the new digital channel.

  1. Access TV Menu: On each connected television, access the TV's menu using its remote control.
  2. Initiate Channel Scan: Navigate to the "Channel Setup," "Auto Program," or "Channel Scan" option. Select to perform a full digital channel scan (ATSC or QAM, depending on your region and setup).
  3. Locate Channel: Once the scan is complete, use your TV's channel up/down buttons or channel list to find the newly added channel with your HDMI video content.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, refer to the following troubleshooting steps.
