2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Package Contents
- ONVIS Smart Motion Sensor (SMS2)
- 2 x AAA Batteries (pre-installed or included)
- Mounting accessories (screws and anchors)
- User Manual (this document)
2.2 Battery Installation
The ONVIS SMS2 sensor is powered by two AAA alkaline batteries. These are typically included and may be pre-installed. If not, open the battery compartment on the back of the device and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
2.3 Connecting to Apple HomeKit
The ONVIS SMS2 sensor is designed to work with Apple HomeKit. A Thread HomeKit Hub is required for full functionality and responsiveness. Compatible hubs include:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen, A2169 or later)
- Apple HomePod (2nd Gen)
- Apple HomePod mini
To add the sensor to your HomeKit setup:
- Ensure your Thread HomeKit Hub is powered on and connected to your network.
- Open the Apple Home app on your iOS device (iOS 17.4 or above is required).
- Tap the "+" icon in the top right corner and select "Add Accessory".
- Scan the HomeKit setup code located on the back of the ONVIS SMS2 sensor or its packaging.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to assign the sensor to a room and configure its settings.
For advanced settings and firmware updates, download the Onvis Home app from the App Store. While the sensor works with HomeKit, the Onvis Home app provides additional controls and access to historical data.
2.4 Mounting the Sensor
The ONVIS SMS2 can be wall-mounted using the included screws and anchors, or placed on a flat surface. For optimal motion detection, consider the following:
- Mount the sensor at a height that allows for clear line-of-sight to the area you wish to monitor.
- Avoid placing the sensor directly facing heat sources, air vents, or direct sunlight, as these can cause false readings.
- The sensor has a maximum detection range of 7 meters (approximately 23 feet) and a 120° coverage angle.

3. Operating the Sensor
3.1 Motion Detection
The primary function of the ONVIS SMS2 is motion detection. When movement is detected within its range, the sensor can trigger automations in Apple HomeKit, such as turning on lights or sending notifications.
- Real-time Notifications: Receive instant alerts on your iOS device when motion is detected, even when you are away from home, provided you have a HomeKit hub.
- Smart Light Triggering: Automate your lights to turn on when you enter a room and off after a preset period of no motion.

3.2 Temperature and Humidity Monitoring
The ONVIS SMS2 includes integrated temperature and humidity sensors. These readings are automatically updated every 15 minutes and can be accessed via the Apple Home app or the Onvis Home app.
- Access Data: Ask Siri for current room temperature and humidity, or view records in the Apple Home app.
- Historical Records: The Onvis Home app allows you to check temperature, humidity, and motion records, with up to 100 recent records and 32 days of historical data.
- Automation: Use temperature and humidity readings as triggers for HomeKit automations, such as activating a humidifier or dehumidifier.

3.3 Smart Activation & Deactivation
The Onvis app allows you to customize motion alerts and set specific time slots for motion detection. This provides complete control over when you receive notifications and when automations are active.
- Scheduled Detection: Configure the sensor to only detect motion during specific hours, aligning with your daily routine and preventing unnecessary alerts.
- Disable Sensor: The Onvis app and certain 3rd party HomeKit apps allow you to disable the motion sensor, preventing it from triggering automations. This feature is exposed to HomeKit, enabling its use in Scenes, Automations, and Shortcuts.

3.4 Daylight Sensor
The sensor includes a daylight detection feature, which can be used to ensure lights only come on when needed, optimizing energy usage.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Battery Replacement
The ONVIS SMS2 uses 2 AAA alkaline batteries. The battery life is approximately 8,760 hours (about 1 year). When the battery level is low, you may receive a notification in the Apple Home app or Onvis Home app. To replace the batteries:
- Carefully remove the sensor from its mounting location.
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Remove the old batteries and insert new AAA alkaline batteries, observing the correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment cover and re-mount the sensor.
4.2 Cleaning
To ensure optimal performance, keep the sensor clean. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
4.3 Firmware Updates
Periodically check for firmware updates using the Onvis Home app. Firmware updates can improve performance, add new features, and address any known issues. Ensure the sensor has sufficient battery life before initiating an update.
5. Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor not responding/offline in Home app. | Low battery, out of range of Thread HomeKit Hub, hub offline, network issues. | Check battery level and replace if necessary. Ensure sensor is within range of your Thread HomeKit Hub. Verify your HomeKit Hub (Apple TV, HomePod mini) is online and connected to the internet. Restart your HomeKit Hub and Wi-Fi router. |
| False motion detections. | Heat sources, direct sunlight, pets, drafts. | Relocate the sensor away from heat sources (radiators, direct sunlight), air vents, or areas with frequent pet movement. Adjust motion sensitivity in the Onvis Home app if available. |
| Motion-based automations not working in iOS Home app (17.2). | Known software issue with iOS Home app (17.2). | As noted by ONVIS, motion-based HomeKit automations for SMS2 can be set up in the Onvis Home app or most 3rd party HomeKit apps. The configuration will sync to the HomeKit system. This issue may be resolved in later iOS versions. |
| Temperature/Humidity readings seem inaccurate. | Sensor placement, environmental factors. | Ensure the sensor is not in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or in a drafty area. Allow time for readings to stabilize after placement. Some 3rd party HomeKit apps or the Onvis app may offer calibration options. |
| Cannot add sensor to HomeKit. | Incorrect setup code, existing pairing, HomeKit hub issues. | Double-check the HomeKit setup code. Ensure the sensor is reset if it was previously paired. Verify your HomeKit hub is functioning correctly and updated. |
If you continue to experience issues, please refer to the support section or contact ONVIS customer service.
