Behringer Chaos Analog Random Sampler Eurorack Module User Manual

Model: CHAOS

Brand: Behringer

1. Introduction

The Behringer Chaos is an 18HP analog Eurorack module designed to introduce dynamic musicality and randomization into your modular synthesis setup. It features two sequentially operating sub-sections: one generating random gates synchronized to a master clock, and another producing random voltages clocked by the first section. This module provides a unique way to explore infinite possibilities and textures within your sound design.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand these safety instructions before operating the Behringer Chaos module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or damage to the module or other equipment.

  • Power Supply: Only use the specified power supply for your Eurorack system. Ensure correct polarity when connecting the module to the Eurorack bus board. Incorrect connection can cause severe damage.
  • Installation: Install the module in a standard Eurorack case. Ensure sufficient ventilation and avoid blocking any vents.
  • Moisture: Do not expose this module to rain, moisture, dripping, or splashing. Do not place objects filled with liquids on the module.
  • Cleaning: Clean only with a dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service this module yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
  • Connections: Always power off your Eurorack system before connecting or disconnecting modules.

Key Controls and Sections:

  • 't' Section (Random Gates): Generates random gate signals. Controls include 'BIAS' and 'RATE'. Outputs are t1, t2, t3.
  • 'X' Section (Random Voltages): Produces random voltage signals, clocked by the 't' section. Controls include 'BIAS', 'SPREAD', and 'STEPS'. Outputs are X1, X2, X3.
  • 'FEEDBACK' Control: A master control influencing the interaction between the 't' and 'X' sections, allowing for complex, evolving patterns.
  • 'JITTER' Control: Adds variability to the timing of the generated gates.
  • 'LENGTH' Control: Adjusts the length of the sequences or patterns.
  • Clock Inputs/Outputs: Dedicated clock inputs and outputs for synchronization with other Eurorack modules.
  • Y Output: An additional output for further modulation possibilities.

4. Setup

Follow these steps to properly install and power your Behringer Chaos module:

  1. Power Off: Ensure your Eurorack case's power supply is completely turned off before installation.
  2. Locate Space: Find an available 18HP (HP = Horizontal Pitch) space in your Eurorack case.
  3. Connect Power: Connect the included 10-pin ribbon cable to the power header on the back of the Chaos module. Ensure the red stripe on the ribbon cable aligns with the -12V pin on both the module and your Eurorack bus board. Incorrect polarity can cause severe damage.
  4. Mount Module: Carefully align the module with the rail screws in your Eurorack case. Secure the module using the provided screws. Do not overtighten.
  5. Power On: Once securely installed and powered correctly, you can power on your Eurorack system.

Note: It is highly recommended to update the module's firmware upon initial setup to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest features. Refer to the "Troubleshooting" section for firmware update instructions.

5. Operating the Chaos Module

The Behringer Chaos module is designed for generating and manipulating random gates and voltages. Understanding its core functions will allow you to integrate it effectively into your patches.

5.1. 't' Section (Random Gates)

This section is responsible for generating random gate signals. It is the primary clock source for the 'X' section.

  • RATE: Controls the speed at which random gates are generated. Turn clockwise for faster rates.
  • BIAS (t): Influences the probability distribution of the gate generation. Adjusting this knob will change the density and pattern of the random gates.
  • JITTER: Introduces timing variations to the gates, making them less rigid and more organic.
  • Outputs (t1, t2, t3): These provide different variations or divisions of the generated random gates. Patch these to trigger envelopes, sequencers, or drum modules.

5.2. 'X' Section (Random Voltages)

This section generates random control voltages (CV) that are clocked by the 't' section. These voltages can be used to modulate parameters in other modules.

  • SPREAD: Determines the range or amplitude of the random voltages. A higher spread will result in a wider variety of voltage values.
  • BIAS (X): Shifts the center point of the random voltage distribution. This allows you to bias the voltages towards higher or lower values.
  • STEPS: Quantizes the random voltages to a specific number of steps, creating stepped random sequences.
  • Outputs (X1, X2, X3): These provide different variations of the generated random voltages. Patch these to V/Oct inputs of oscillators, filter cutoffs, or other CV inputs.

5.3. Global Controls and Connectivity

  • FEEDBACK: This central control introduces feedback between the 't' and 'X' sections, creating complex, inter-dependent random patterns. Experiment with this knob to discover evolving textures.
  • LENGTH: Affects the overall length or complexity of the generated patterns, often interacting with the feedback mechanism.
  • Clock Warping: The module's internal clock can be manipulated, allowing for dynamic changes in tempo and rhythm. This is often achieved through external CV input to the clock section or by manipulating the internal clock parameters.
  • CV/Gate Control: Most parameters on the Chaos module can be controlled via external Control Voltage (CV) inputs, allowing for dynamic modulation from other modules in your system.
  • Y Output: Provides an additional, often unique, random output that can be used for further modulation or as an alternative to the main 't' or 'X' outputs.

6. Maintenance

The Behringer Chaos module is designed for durability, but proper care will ensure its longevity and performance.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the module's surface. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish and controls.
  • Environment: Store and operate the module in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and excessive dust.
  • Connections: Periodically check all patch cable connections for secure fit. Avoid excessive force when inserting or removing cables.
  • Firmware: Keep the module's firmware updated to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest features and bug fixes. Refer to the "Troubleshooting" section for details.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Behringer Chaos module.

7.1. No Output / Module Not Functioning

  • Power Connection: Double-check that the 10-pin ribbon cable is correctly connected to both the module and the bus board, with the red stripe aligned to -12V.
  • Eurorack Power: Ensure your Eurorack case's power supply is turned on and providing sufficient power to all modules.
  • Patch Cables: Verify that all patch cables are securely connected to the correct inputs and outputs.

7.2. Unexpected Behavior / Glitches

  • Firmware Update: Several users have reported that initial units may ship with older firmware that causes unexpected behavior. It is crucial to update the firmware immediately upon receiving the module.
  • Firmware Update Procedure:
    1. Visit the official Behringer website (behringer.com).
    2. Navigate to the support or product page for the "Chaos" module.
    3. Download the latest firmware and any accompanying update tools or instructions.
    4. Follow the provided instructions carefully to perform the firmware update. This typically involves connecting the module to a computer via USB (if available) or using an audio interface for data transfer.
  • Power Cycle: Try powering off your Eurorack system completely, waiting a few seconds, and then powering it back on.
  • Reset Settings: Consult the Behringer Chaos manual (if a more detailed one is available online) for any factory reset procedures.

7.3. Noise or Interference

  • Power Supply Quality: Ensure your Eurorack power supply is clean and stable. Noisy power can introduce unwanted artifacts.
  • Grounding: Check the grounding of your Eurorack system and audio equipment.
