Normcore 58.5mm Puck Screen Instruction Manual

Model: 58.5mm x 0.8mm

1. Introduction

The Normcore 58.5mm Puck Screen is an essential accessory designed to enhance your espresso brewing experience. Crafted from durable 316 Stainless Steel, this ultra-slim 0.8mm thick screen is engineered to improve water distribution, prevent channeling, and ensure a more even and balanced extraction. It also helps to keep your espresso machine's brew head cleaner by minimizing coffee debris contact.

This reusable metal filter replaces the need for single-use paper filters, which can sometimes alter the taste of your espresso. Its precise 0.18mm perforations ensure optimal water flow and extraction consistency.

2. Setup

  1. Prepare your portafilter: Grind your coffee beans to your desired fineness and fill your 58mm portafilter basket.
  2. Distribute and tamp: Use a distribution tool and tamper to create an even and level coffee bed.
  3. Place the Puck Screen: Carefully place the Normcore 58.5mm Puck Screen directly on top of the tamped coffee grounds in the portafilter basket. Ensure it sits flat and centered.
  4. Insert into machine: Lock the portafilter into your espresso machine's group head.

4. Maintenance

Proper cleaning of your Normcore Puck Screen ensures longevity and consistent performance.

  • After each use: Remove the puck screen from the portafilter. Wash it thoroughly with water to remove any loose coffee grounds.
  • Deep cleaning: If the product becomes stained or coffee oils accumulate, clean it with a dedicated espresso machine cleaning solution (such as Cafiza) or by using a blast from your espresso machine's steam wand.
  • Drying: Allow the puck screen to air dry completely before storing or reusing.

5. Troubleshooting

The Normcore Puck Screen is designed to mitigate common espresso brewing issues. If you experience problems, consider the following:

  • Uneven Extraction (Channeling): The puck screen is specifically designed to prevent channeling by distributing water evenly. Ensure your coffee grounds are properly distributed and tamped before placing the screen.
  • Dirty Brew Head: The puck screen significantly reduces coffee grounds from reaching the brew head. If you still notice excessive residue, ensure the screen is clean and properly seated. Regular cleaning of the screen and your machine is recommended.
  • Slow or Fast Flow: While the puck screen aids in even flow, grind size and tamping pressure remain critical. Adjust your grind size or tamping technique if your espresso flow is too slow or too fast.
