Introduction
The Brita 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher is designed to provide cleaner, great-tasting tap water by reducing impurities such as chlorine (taste and odor), copper, mercury, zinc, and cadmium. This manual provides essential instructions for the proper assembly, use, and care of your Brita pitcher to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
What's Included
Please verify that all components are present before proceeding with setup:
- 1 Brita 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher (clear reservoir, white lid with Smartlight indicator, white inner basin)
- 1 Brita Standard Water Filter
- 3 Generic Water Filters

Figure 1: Components of the Brita 10-Cup Water Filter Pitcher system. This image displays the clear pitcher, the white lid with the Smartlight indicator, and a total of four water filters (one Brita brand and three generic).
Setup Instructions
- Wash Components: Hand-wash the pitcher, lid, and inner basin with mild soap and cold water. Do not wash the Smartlight indicator on the lid in a dishwasher or submerge it in water. Rinse thoroughly.
- Prepare Filter: Submerge the new Brita filter in cold water for 15 seconds to remove any loose carbon particles. This is called "pre-soaking."
- Insert Filter: Place the inner basin into the pitcher. Insert the prepared filter firmly into the opening in the inner basin. Press down until it creates a tight seal.
- Activate Smartlight Indicator: On the lid, press and hold the "START" button for 6 seconds until the green light flashes. This indicates the filter life tracker has been reset.
- Initial Fills: Fill the pitcher with cold tap water. Discard the first two pitchers of filtered water, or use them for watering plants. This flushes out any remaining carbon dust.
- Your Brita pitcher is now ready for use.
Operating Instructions
- Filling the Pitcher: Remove the lid and fill the inner basin with cold tap water. The water will filter through to the main reservoir. Do not overfill.
- Pouring Filtered Water: Once the water has filtered, you can pour it directly from the pitcher. The lid is designed to stay in place during pouring.
- Smartlight Indicator: The Smartlight indicator on the lid will flash green, yellow, or red to indicate filter status:
- Green Light: Filter is good.
- Yellow Light: Filter is nearing the end of its life and should be replaced soon.
- Red Light: Filter needs to be replaced immediately for optimal performance.
Maintenance
- Filter Replacement: Replace your Brita filter approximately every 40 gallons or every 2 months, whichever comes first, or when the Smartlight indicator turns red. Follow the "Prepare Filter" and "Insert Filter" steps from the Setup section for replacement. Remember to reset the Smartlight indicator after each filter change.
- Cleaning the Pitcher: Hand-wash the pitcher, lid (excluding the Smartlight), and inner basin regularly with mild soap and cold water. Do not use abrasive cleaners. The pitcher and inner basin are top-rack dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended for the lid to protect the Smartlight.
- Storage: If the pitcher will not be used for an extended period, remove the filter, discard it, and clean all components. Store the pitcher in a cool, dry place.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Slow filtration rate. | Filter may be clogged or not properly seated. | Remove and re-insert the filter, ensuring a tight seal. If the issue persists, replace the filter. |
| Smartlight indicator not working or incorrect. | Not reset after filter change, or battery issue. | Ensure the Smartlight was reset by pressing and holding the "START" button for 6 seconds. If the issue continues, contact customer support. |
