3. Setup
Attaching the Lens:
- Ensure both the camera and lens are powered off.
- Align the mounting index marks on the lens and camera body.
- Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place, indicating it is securely locked.
Attaching the Lens Hood:
Align the lens hood with the front of the lens and rotate it until it locks into position. The lens hood helps to prevent stray light from entering the lens and causing flare or ghosting.
Using the Tripod Collar:
The lens is equipped with a tripod collar for stable mounting on a tripod or monopod. Loosen the locking knob on the collar to rotate the lens for horizontal or vertical shooting, then tighten the knob to secure its position.
4. Operating Instructions
Zooming:
Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 150mm and 500mm. The lens barrel extends as you zoom towards 500mm.
Focus Mode Switch (AF/MF):
- AF (Autofocus): For automatic focusing. The camera will control the lens focus.
- MF (Manual Focus): For manual focusing. Rotate the focus ring to adjust focus manually.
Focus Limiter Switch:
This switch allows you to limit the autofocus range, which can improve autofocus speed in certain situations.
- FULL: Allows autofocus across the entire focus range (Minimum Object Distance to Infinity).
- 10m-∞: Limits autofocus to subjects 10 meters (approximately 32.8 feet) and further. Useful for distant subjects.
- MOD-10m: Limits autofocus to subjects between the Minimum Object Distance (MOD) and 10 meters. Useful for closer subjects.
Vibration Compensation (VC) Switch:
The VC mechanism helps reduce blur caused by camera shake.
- ON: Activates the Vibration Compensation. Recommended for handheld shooting.
- OFF: Deactivates the Vibration Compensation. Recommended when using a tripod or when the camera's own stabilization is preferred.
Zoom Lock Mechanism:
The lens features a zoom lock switch to prevent the lens barrel from extending unintentionally during transport or when pointed downwards. Engage the lock at the 150mm position to secure the lens.
Custom Switch:
The lens includes a custom switch with 'NON-LINEAR' and 'LINEAR' settings. Refer to your camera's manual or Tamron's official resources for detailed information on how these settings affect lens behavior and customization options.
5. Maintenance
Cleaning the Lens:
- Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe dust and smudges from the lens elements.
- For stubborn marks, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens surface and body.
- Avoid touching the lens elements with bare hands.
Storage:
- Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
- Attach the front and rear lens caps when not in use to protect the lens elements.
- If storing for extended periods, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold growth.
6. Troubleshooting
Lens Not Focusing:
- Ensure the focus mode switch is set to AF for autofocus or MF for manual control.
- Check the focus limiter switch setting. If set to a limited range, the lens may not focus on subjects outside that range.
- Verify that the lens is securely attached to the camera body.
- Clean the electrical contacts on both the lens and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
Image Blur:
- Ensure the VC (Vibration Compensation) switch is ON for handheld shooting, especially at longer focal lengths.
- Check shutter speed. Use a faster shutter speed to minimize motion blur, particularly with telephoto lenses.
- Confirm proper focus.
Lens Barrel Does Not Extend/Retract Smoothly:
- Ensure the zoom lock switch is disengaged.
- Avoid applying excessive force. If the issue persists, contact customer support.
