5. Setup and Installation

The Heschen HSM3DC-320 circuit breaker is designed for panel mounting. Ensure the mounting surface is stable and provides adequate ventilation.

Wiring Instructions:

  1. Identify the input and output terminals on the circuit breaker.
  2. Connect the DC positive (+) and negative (-) cables from your solar array or charge controller to the appropriate input terminals.
  3. Connect the DC positive (+) and negative (-) cables to your battery bank or inverter from the output terminals.
  4. Ensure all cable lugs are properly crimped and securely fastened to the terminals.
  5. Important Note on Lugs: For 300A applications, 4/0 AWG cable lugs are typically required. Some users have reported that the terminal slots may be narrow for certain 4/0 AWG lugs, potentially requiring minor modification to the lug or terminal area for proper fit. Always ensure a secure and full contact connection.

6. Operating Instructions

The Heschen HSM3DC-320 circuit breaker features a toggle switch for manual operation and a 'PUSH TO TRIP' button for immediate circuit interruption.

To Turn On/Reset:

  1. If the breaker has tripped, the handle will be in the central 'TRIPPED' position.
  2. First, push the handle fully down to the 'OFF' position.
  3. Then, push the handle fully up to the 'ON' position to restore power.

To Turn Off:

  • Push the toggle handle fully down to the 'OFF' position.

To Manually Trip:

  • Press the red 'PUSH TO TRIP' button located on the front of the circuit breaker. This will immediately interrupt the circuit and move the handle to the 'TRIPPED' position.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your circuit breaker.

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the circuit breaker for any signs of physical damage, discoloration, or loose connections.
  • Cleaning: Keep the circuit breaker free from dust and debris. Use a dry, non-abrasive cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquids or solvents.
  • Connection Check: Ensure all terminal connections remain tight. Loose connections can lead to overheating and potential failure.
  • Functional Test: Occasionally test the trip mechanism by pressing the 'PUSH TO TRIP' button to ensure it functions correctly.

8. Troubleshooting

If the circuit breaker trips frequently or fails to operate as expected, consider the following:

  • Frequent Tripping: This often indicates an overload or a short circuit in the protected system. Disconnect loads and test components to identify the fault. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker without investigating the cause.
  • Failure to Reset: If the breaker does not reset after being pushed to the 'OFF' position and then 'ON', there might be a persistent fault or internal damage.
  • Overheating: Check for loose connections or undersized wiring if the breaker or surrounding area feels excessively hot.
  • No Power: Verify that the breaker is in the 'ON' position and that there is power supplied to the input terminals.

For persistent issues or if you suspect internal damage, consult a qualified electrician or contact Heschen customer support.
