Cable Matters 20Gbps USB C Switch (Model 201352) Instruction Manual

Seamlessly share a USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 monitor or docking station between two computers.

1. Overview

The Cable Matters 20Gbps USB C Switch allows two computers to share a single USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 monitor or docking station. This device is designed to streamline your workspace by eliminating the need to constantly swap cables between devices. It supports high-resolution video output, fast data transfer, and power delivery to the active computer.

Compatibility Warning:

  • Use only the included USB4 20Gbps cables. Do not substitute with Thunderbolt 3/4/5 cables.
  • Avoid USB-C docks with built-in (non-detachable) host cables.
  • This switch works with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 docks, but its 20Gbps bandwidth (vs. 40Gbps docks) may limit display resolution, refresh rate, or number of monitors compared to a direct connection.

3. Features

  • Ultra-Fast 20 Gbps USB4 / USB-C Switching: Instantly share a USB-C monitor or Thunderbolt 4 monitor or a Thunderbolt docking station between two laptops. Achieves data transfer speeds up to 20 Gbps, suitable for large file transfers and high-resolution video streaming.
  • 8K Video Resolution Support: Experience stunning 8K video output at 30Hz or 4K at 144Hz on Windows, and 4K at 60Hz on macOS when connected to a single USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 monitor.
  • Docking Station Conversion: Share one USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 docking station between two computers, effectively turning it into a KVM switch. For dual or multi-monitor setups on Windows, a USB-C/TB4 dock with MST is required (macOS supports one external display).
  • 140W Power Delivery Pass-through Charging: Provides robust power delivery pass-through up to 140W to the active computer, ensuring fast and efficient charging for compatible laptops and USB-C devices. Note: This switch charges only the selected (active) computer.
  • Convenient RF Remote Control: Seamlessly switch between two connected hosts using the included RF remote control, eliminating the need for additional software or drivers and allowing for flexible placement of the switch.

4. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your Cable Matters 20Gbps USB C Switch:

  1. Connect the Switch to your Display/Dock: Connect the pigtail cable (the short, attached USB-C cable) from the switch to your USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 monitor or docking station.
  2. Connect Computers: Use the two included 3.3ft USB4 20Gbps cables to connect your two computers to the two USB-C input ports on the switch. These ports are labeled '1' and '2'.
  3. Power (Optional): The USB-C port near the pigtail cable does not charge the host. If the host cannot power the switch, use a 5V charger (not included) with the dedicated power input port on the switch.
  4. Initial Setup: It is recommended to power off all connected devices (monitor and computers) before making connections. Once all connections are secure, power on your devices. If you encounter display issues, a fresh restart of all devices after connection may resolve them.

6. Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Cable Matters 20Gbps USB C Switch, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid exposing the switch to moisture or liquids.
  • Clean the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ensure cables are not bent sharply or under excessive strain to prevent damage.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Cable Matters 20Gbps USB C Switch, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • No Display/Intermittent Display:
    • Ensure you are using the included USB4 20Gbps cables. Other USB-C or Thunderbolt cables may not be fully compatible or may have directional requirements.
    • Verify all connections are secure between the computers, switch, and display/dock.
    • Restart all connected devices (computers and monitor) after ensuring all cables are properly connected.
    • If using a docking station, ensure it is a Thunderbolt 4 dock with a detachable host cable, and check its compatibility with MST for multi-monitor setups on Windows.
    • For Thunderbolt 3 devices, output is limited to 4K@60Hz and only one external display is supported.
  • Remote Control Not Working:
    • Check the battery in the remote control. Replace if necessary.
    • Attempt to re-pair the remote control with the switch as described in the Operating Instructions section.
  • No Power Delivery/Slow Charging:
    • Ensure the connected monitor or docking station supports power delivery to the host.
    • Remember that the switch only provides power delivery to the active computer.
    • If the host cannot power the switch, connect an external 5V charger (not included) to the dedicated power input port on the switch.
  • Data Transfer Speed Issues:
    • Ensure all connected cables are rated for 20Gbps or higher.
    • The overall speed is limited by the lowest-rated component in the chain.
