  • Induction Motor: Maintenance-free, low-noise, and low-vibration 120V single-phase motor.
  • Adjustable Eye Shields: Transparent shields to protect eyes from sparks and debris.
  • Spark Deflectors: Metal guards to direct sparks away from the operator.
  • Adjustable Steady Rests: Supports for the workpiece, one with a center groove for sharpening welding tungsten and angle indicators for drill bits.
  • Integrated LED Work Lights: Illuminates the work area for improved visibility.
  • Vibration-Dampening Rubber Feet: Provides stability and reduces vibration during operation.

Setup and Assembly

The Metabo DS 200 Plus bench grinder requires some assembly before first use. Ensure all components listed in the package contents are present and undamaged.

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the grinder and all accessories from the packaging. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.
  2. Mounting: For stable and safe operation, the bench grinder should be securely bolted to a sturdy workbench. Use appropriate bolts and washers (not included) through the mounting holes in the base.
  3. Attaching Steady Rests:
    • Attach the two heavy-duty adjustable steady rests to their respective mounting points near each grinding wheel.
    • Ensure they are securely fastened but allow for adjustment.
  4. Installing Spark Deflectors and Eye Shields:
    • Mount the spark deflectors above each grinding wheel.
    • Attach the adjustable eye shields to the grinder, ensuring they can be positioned to cover the grinding wheels effectively.
  5. Wheel Inspection: Before connecting to power, visually inspect both grinding wheels for any cracks, chips, or damage. Gently tap each wheel with a non-metallic object; a clear ring indicates a sound wheel, while a dull thud may indicate a crack.
  6. Power Connection: Connect the grinder to a grounded 120V power outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the "OFF" position before plugging in.

Operating Instructions

Always follow safety guidelines before and during operation.

  1. Pre-Operation Check:
    • Ensure the grinder is securely mounted.
    • Verify eye shields and spark deflectors are properly positioned for maximum protection.
    • Adjust steady rests to be within 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) of the grinding wheel surface. This minimizes the risk of the workpiece being caught between the rest and the wheel.
    • Confirm the work area is clear.
  2. Starting the Grinder:
    • Turn on the power switch. The integrated LED work lights will illuminate.
    • Allow the grinder to reach full operating speed (3,600 RPM) before beginning work.
  3. Grinding Techniques:
    • Sharpening: For sharpening tools like drill bits, use the steady rest with angle indicators. Apply light, consistent pressure, moving the tool across the wheel face to maintain a sharp edge.
    • Hands sharpening a drill bit on the Metabo bench grinder

Figure 3: Sharpening a drill bit using the adjustable steady rest. This image demonstrates the precise application of a drill bit against the grinding wheel, with sparks visible.

    • Deburring: Use the appropriate wheel (coarse for heavy burrs, fine for finishing) and apply the workpiece gently to remove sharp edges or burrs.
    • Hands deburring a metal pipe on the Metabo bench grinder

Figure 4: Deburring a metal pipe. This image shows a user smoothing the edge of a metal pipe against the grinding wheel, indicating a deburring or finishing operation.

    • General Grinding: Apply the workpiece to the face of the grinding wheel with steady, even pressure. Avoid excessive pressure, which can overheat the workpiece or damage the wheel.
    • Hands grinding a metal piece on the Metabo bench grinder, producing sparks

Figure 5: Grinding a metal piece. This image captures the action of grinding, with numerous sparks flying from the point of contact between the metal workpiece and the grinding wheel.

    • Using Wire Wheels: The grinder is compatible with 8-inch wire wheels for cleaning and polishing. Replace grinding wheels with appropriate wire wheels when needed.
    • Metabo DS 200 Plus Bench Grinder with a wire wheel installed

Figure 6: Bench grinder with a wire wheel. This image shows the Metabo grinder with a wire wheel attached to one side, suitable for cleaning or polishing tasks.

  4. Stopping the Grinder: Turn off the power switch. Allow the wheels to come to a complete stop naturally. Do not attempt to stop the wheels by hand or with a workpiece.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Metabo bench grinder. Always disconnect the power cord before performing any maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the grinder to remove dust and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air. Do not use solvents that could damage plastic parts.
  • Wheel Inspection: Periodically inspect grinding wheels for wear, cracks, or glazing. Glazed wheels can be dressed with a wheel dresser to expose fresh abrasive. Replace wheels that are worn down to 1/2 inch (13 mm) of their original diameter or are damaged.
  • Steady Rest Adjustment: Ensure steady rests remain properly adjusted, maintaining a small gap from the wheel.
  • Eye Shield Condition: Check eye shields for scratches or damage that could impair visibility. Replace if necessary.
  • Motor: The induction motor is maintenance-free and does not require lubrication.
  • Power Cord: Inspect the power cord for any signs of damage. If damaged, have it replaced by a qualified service technician.
