- Do not operate the saw in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.
- Always remove the battery pack before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool.
- Use only Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries with Star Protection. Using non-genuine or "knock-off" batteries can cause fires, personal injuries, or property damage.

4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation and Charging
- Ensure the battery is fully charged using the provided 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Charger (DC18SD). Refer to the charger's manual for specific charging instructions.
- Align the battery pack (BL1820B) with the battery port on the saw.
- Slide the battery into place until it clicks securely.
- To remove, press the release button on the battery and slide it out.
4.2 Chain and Guide Bar Assembly (if not pre-assembled)
The kit includes a 6" Guide Bar (T-05913) and a 6" Saw Chain (T-05907).
- Ensure the battery is removed before assembly.
- Remove the chain cover.
- Place the chain around the guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges are facing the correct direction.
- Fit the guide bar and chain onto the saw, aligning the chain with the drive sprocket.
- Replace the chain cover and hand-tighten the adjustment knob.
4.3 Chain Tension Adjustment
The XCU14 features "tool-free" chain adjustment for convenience.
- With the battery removed, loosen the chain cover knob slightly.
- Turn the chain tensioning dial to adjust the chain tension. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
- Tighten the chain cover knob firmly.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Pre-Operation Checklist
- Ensure the battery is fully charged.
- Check chain tension and ensure it is properly lubricated (refer to maintenance section).
- Verify the retractable guard is functioning correctly.
- Inspect the saw for any damage or loose parts.

5.2 Starting and Stopping the Saw
- To start: Press the safety lock-off button and then squeeze the trigger switch.
- To stop: Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop quickly.
5.3 Cutting Techniques
- Hold the saw firmly with both hands. The soft grip handle is engineered for even cutting pressure.
- Position the saw so the branch is between the guide bar and the retractable guard.
- Allow the saw to reach full speed before engaging the wood.
- Apply steady, even pressure. Do not force the saw.
- Be aware of kickback, especially when cutting with the tip of the guide bar.
- The saw is capable of up to 140 cuts in 2" cedar with one fully charged 18V LXT 2.0Ah battery.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
- Always remove the battery before cleaning.
- Clean the saw thoroughly after each use, removing sawdust and debris from the chain, guide bar, and motor housing.
- Use a brush or compressed air for cleaning. Do not use solvents that could damage plastic parts.
6.2 Chain Lubrication
Regular chain lubrication is crucial for optimal performance and chain life.
- Ensure the battery is removed.
- Apply chain oil to the guide bar groove and chain links.
- Check the oil level in the reservoir (if applicable) and refill as needed.

6.3 Chain Sharpening and Replacement
- A dull chain reduces cutting efficiency and increases kickback risk. Sharpen the chain regularly using appropriate tools (e.g., D-75683 5/32" Round Saw Chain Files or D-75910 5/32" Saw Chain Sharpening Kit).
- Replace the chain when it becomes too dull to sharpen or is damaged.
